Hello! we are thinking of going to Whitby and that area for a break at half term, can anyone recommend some good accomodation and any must do things. Thanks! :)

Hi, we're about an hour from whitby so have never stayed there, but we prefer it to the much busier scarborough.

For accommodation try the tourist info office, they're usually quite good.

You MUST eat fish and chips (Magpie cafe our favourite, but you have to queue!). Also plenty of boat trips available, shops with whitby jet jewellery, walk up to the abbey where dracula was set, small fairground, stroll on beach if weather good and tide out! There's also some nice shops in the town (great choc shop over the bridge where they weigh out broken choc for you into little bags!) crazy golf on cliff where whale bones are.

I'm sure there's much more to do too, that's all we ever get done!!

Just noticed where you're from - been on phone and writing letters to mansfield town fc and the trading standards there today. I work for a coach company that transport darlington fc supporters to away matches and we got a ticket in post on friday for parking on the trading estate - in september!! But we hadn't had a ticket on the night or ticket in the post in the months since, and the stewards had told us to park there! Trading standards had heard of the parking ticket issuing company - surprise surprise!!

I grew up in Filey so can't help with the accomodation either but maybe can help with things to do.

In Whitby the abbey is nice to visit and I love to play the crazy golf game on the cliff top. I second eating at the Magpie Cafe, definatley a must every time we visit.
I like to go for a ride on the NYM railway which is near by (the 2nd stop is the village they use to film heartbeat, the 1st station is Hogwarts!) Pickering is pretty to look around too.
The Dalby Forest near by is also very pretty and worth a drive through. There are some lovely walks to do there too, they are different levels which are easy to do. You can also rent bikes there to ride around.

A trip to Scarborough is nice too and not too far away. There is lots to do there on the sea front plus Peasholme Park is nice to walk around. Kinderland there is quite good for kids too, it is like an adventure playground place but they do charge to get in (I used to love going there when I was younger!!) There is also the ruined castle to look around which is nice and a sea life centre in the North Bay.
Have a great trip.

Thankyou Dana and Lynn, I'm really looking forward to it now. We will definately take a trip to Scarborough too. Just looking around for a nice B&B now.

Lynn - that;'s Mansfield FC for you! We are notts County fans! ;)

In Scarborough at the fron there is an awsome old style ice cream palour.

With all sorts of yummy stuff there.

The Tourist Board Information Center can probably give you a few ideas for fun days out in and around Whitby. The North Yorkshire Moors and Park are beautiful look them up on the internet, there are a few bus services going to little towns and villages of interest too and lovely walks which you can find out more about-if you like the countryside;) You might even find some Jet or some fossils while you're at the coast too.:goodvibes Have a look at www.moors.uk.net and www.nymr.co.uk and www.north-york-moors.com for a few ideas

We had a weekend in York/Whitby last year. Stayed in a Holiday Inn Express just outside York, close the one of the park 'n' rides :)

We had a nice day in York then had a meal at a pub close to the hotel and the nthe next morning drove into Whitby. We walked up to the abbey and had a good ook round. There just happened to be a viking festival thingy on at the abbey, so there was a 'viking' village set up and lots of vikings in costume. There were also some mock battles :)

We ate in a fish 'n' chip restaurant close to the harbour - can't remember the name though.

It's a nice drive from York to Whitby - plenty of nice scenery :)

We always stay at the Sander's Yard. It's a cafe/b&B right in the middle of the old town. There's no parking at the actual B&B but there's plenty of parking at the top of the hill...you just have to walk down. The rooms are lovely and they also have 2 gorgeous cottages, all around a central courtyard. I can't recommend the location and friendly welcome more.;)
