Which Xbox should I get?

I know there have been several Xbox questions around here lately, but I haven't seen this one yet (unless I missed it somehow). My 10 year old ds has asked for an Xbox for Christmas. I know very little about Xboxes, so I'm trying to figure out which one should I buy. All that I know right now is ds loves MineCraft and wants to play it with his friends over the Xbox.

Looking at them, it seems like my choices are 4GB or 250GB and with Kinnect or without Kinnect. I don't really want to pay $350 to get the 250GB with Kinnect, so it looks like I need to choose the between getting the 250GB ($200- $250) vs. 4GB with Kinnect ($200-$250). Anyone have a recommendation based on their experiences?

Also, can you add memory to these?

Thanks!

My boyfriend whom is obsessed with gaming said to get him the 4gb. He said that being as he is young he probably won't need all 4gb, and minecraft looks like it is small in regards to file size. To answer your other question yes you can get extra storage, the difference between the 4gb/250gb is that the 4gb has no hard drive, so you can purchase a hard drive online for the Xbox (he paid $40 for an 80gb hard drive). Hope that helps!

250 without kinect unless he is really into motion games like tennis, bowling, dancing...

I have 2 ds(16,14) and they have had there's for years, each has there own because they need the memory, 4 won't hold much of anything.

My boys are bgi gamers, they each have a 360, with live of course, they share wii, ps, and pc's,1 alienware(with 1 getting another for x-mas)...my point is, if your son is moving up and you are going to get the 360, get one that will last, go with the 250

My DS10 was just deleting a bunch of stuff off his hard drive today to make more room and he has a 60GB hard drive (old Xbox).

My DS14 had an Xbox with a 20GB hard drive (again, the old kind) and never ran out of room. His died and he just upgraded to the new 250 GB kind.

If you plan on allowing your DS to download stuff he will need the bigger hard drive. If he is just playing games and needs the hard drive for saves then 4GB is plenty.

The Kinect, my kids enjoyed it for maybe a month and have not touched it much after that. It's okay, but not necessary.

Just my 2 cents, which usually isn't even worth that much lol.

The Xbox uses internal hard drives, you can buy them.

If you buy the 4GB that memory is contained on board in the Xbox. You could add a hard drive for additional storage.
If you go with the 250GB that is a hard drive and would need to be replaced with a larger hard drive if it did not provide enough storage for your needs.

There is a XBox thread on the Community Board. It's just a couple of days old.

We splurged and got our 4 kids an Xbox 360 250 gb last year. I think you would be happier to have the extra memory as your DS ages. And I am one who usually goes very frugal. The kids have played the Xbox in one way or another every day since they got it.

BTW my boys have been playing Minecraft and Modern Warfare lately-just got the new one today.

We did get the Kinect and have enjoyed it. Nothing like having a room full of teenagers (boys and girls) dancing to Just Dance on a Friday night. Also, we adults (DH, myself, DMIL, DSis and BIL) have had lots of fun with bowling, water rafting, volleyball, darts and other games with the Kinect.

Oldest DS (16) Says Minecraft doesn't use much memory but you won't be happy with the 4GB hard drive. He doesn't have Kinect - It's in his bedroom which is in a word tiny so it doesn't have the space for the kinect (I think you need 15 ft). He also plays Minecraft, shooting games, role playing games and driving games. But, then again, we have a Wii for the motion games if he wants to play them (which he never does).

Thanks for everyone's response! It's given me a lot to think about. Now I'm leaning towards splurging a little bit and getting him the 250GB with Kinnect. Most of the BF deals are either one or the other, so it looks like I need to do some digging on finding the best price for it.

In the interests of saving you some late night standing in line - Be aware too that last year Best Buy offered their BF X-box deal (250 GB bundle) online on Thursday with free home delivery and my local Target offered price matching on their 4GB bundle (so you would buy Wednesday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving, go back to the store Black Friday afternoon with receipt in hand and get the difference refunded) - they also offered a separate deal on the Kinect. For the Target Bundle do double check with your local store on this as some of them won't price match or may not have the same bundle in stock before BF. My Target only had a very limited number of these in stock and they were sold out within 1 hour of the store opening so it's something to think about.

I bought the 4 gig w kinnect and then bought a 32 gig thumb drive from staples for $20.

Explain his please to a tech dummy! DSs have an older Xbox & are always saying they are out of memory. They have Xbox Live & play a lot of games, especially ones like COD MW3, Black Ops, etc. They want to upgrade to a unit with more memory - but you're saying they can keep the older unit & just add more memory for $20? Tell me how!! I'd much rather add memory to the old unit, it works just fine, than spend a few hundred $$ on a new one.

I just went through this same process. In the end I bought the 250 GB without the Kinect. My reasoning is that it's easier to add the Kinect on later for relatively cheap (I'm keeping my eye out for a holiday bundle) than it is to add a hard drive. We have some friends who bought the 4GB model with the Kinect last year for their kids for Christmas. That 4GB was full after less than a week. They are getting around the issue with USB flash drives but they admit it doesn't work that great and they wish they had gotten the 250GB instead.

He probably wont even use the Kinect much. You really need the one with 250GB. My DH has a 360 and he downloads a lot of his disks so the drive is not always running. Running it all the time will wear out the machine much faster. 4GB really is nothing.

playstation 3.
Had an Xbox 360 within two years I went through three of them due to malfuctions. Luckily I bought an extended warrenty from bestbuy.

Also playstation 3 doesnt charge a monthly fee to play games online. That saves $$.

PS3 black friday deals are $199 for 250GB console, controller, and a descent game.

PS3 and Xbox 360 are like Ford and Chevy people. Someone won't consider the other. But to me it's worth looking into if I was you and your child.

But if all of child's friends have Xbox360 I would go with 360. So they can swap games and play each other online. But if they are PS3 I would sway him to PS3.

My DH & i were doing a search about the Xbox recently.(we have one 12 yr old DS) Next year they are coming (probably 2013 holidays) out with a new Xbox. We are waiting.

250 gig without a question. I don't even know why they offer 4 gig. It will fill very very fast and we find adding in a thumb drive works for taking saves to someone else's house but the Xbox runs very slow with it in.

Up to you if you think Kinect is worth it or not, but it would probably be easier to find a used Kinect and add it on if you want to save money. Can't just easily change the hard drive.
