Which would you do buying resale or through disney?

It seems since Disney has this new structure for DVC ownership, they have pushed away a huge market away from them and given sales to re-sale:confused3.

I just don't get their logic unless there is something coming down the line that we don't know yet. Oh well, I am not in the market for anymore points, so what we have now will serve us well.

We have purchased points both directly and thru resale. If we were to buy points now I would go direct. Holding points 40 years, plus or minus, is a long time, and I want the maximum flexibility to use them. Good luck on your decision. ;)

I'm concerned about the comment... you cannot use points on cruises and other places if you buy resale.

Is this a true comment? Does Disney know if you purchased resale vs direct?

I'm still trying to decide which option is the best for our 1st purchase.

This is a fabulous thread!....:cool1:

This is first major thing that Disney has changed since the inception of the DVC (or at least since I became a member) that negatively effects a buyer of resale points. I think that for a vast majority (99% or more?), this has absolutely no effect on how we use our membership... well... i think it has started to drive the resale price down a little, so it actually has positive effect on resale buyers. In my opinion, i think it was more of a scare tactic to make people like you think twice about buying resale vs direct. If you plan to visit WDW at least every other year for the foreseeable future, DVC resale is still for you. If you want a timeshare to explore the rest of the world, look into Hilton or one of the others... you get more for your $$$.

Yes... Disney knows if you're a resale or direct purchaser. I believe it was stated on another thread that it can be seen by all who accesses it (CM). However... i make it easy for them to I.D. me... i walk around with a hat that says "Ask me how to save money by buying DVC resale."

I'm not willing to pay an extra $10,000 or so (depending on the size of the contract, of course) for a DVC contract and hope that possibly one day i might have more flexibility than someone who bought resale... and that's assuming that future benefit cuts to resales won't be grandfathered, even though they have set a precedent with the most recent change.

ok... I think I'm finally getting it. This prompts another question, and I apologize if this is on another thread or location. If you know the area or threads I should be reading, please let me know. I'm searching everything I can find to understand this process.

What happens if I purchase both ways, intially thru Direct (min purchase) and then resale for additional points?

Thanks again....

then the points you bot direct are unrestricted while the points you bot resale are restricted in their use.

As far as future restrictions are concerned, just remember that really the only iron clad promise is that you can make a reservation at your home resort. Nothing else.

Just remember though--the options currently available to direct buyers but not resale buyers are perks and can be taken away at any time from everyone, so I would caution any new buyer to use this as part of the decision as to who to buy a contract from.

Pretty sure i've read on here that you are guaranteed to have a booking advantage at your home resort as well. I could be wrong, however.

but if something happens and you need to sell, remember that you will be selling at resale prices whether you bought a cheaper resale contract or paid full direct pricing.
