Which TV and Why??

After much reading on the internet I got a 52 inch rear projection DLP about a year ago. There are 2 types of rear projection--"plain" and DLP and I just remember that the DLP cost a little more but was supposed to be much better quality picture. The rear projection tv's were less expensive than the plasma and the LCD but still not too heavy or huge in the back. I also remember that it was always recommended to get the extended warranty as a previous poster mentioned, regarding the bulbs. I haven't noticed any problem with swirling effects and we are careful not to leave video games on to avoid the burnin effect. I would have liked a plasma or LCD but didn't want to pay the price so the rear projection was a good compromise for me.
In retrospect I would probably got the 40 inch--it would have been big enough.

We have a 37" Sony Trinatron that must be close to 12 years old. The picture is flashing off and on.

My parents Sony TV was doing this as well. They called a repairman that comes to the house. When asked what it was doing, they said picture flashing on and off. He asked oh is it a Sony? They replied yes and he goes on to say Yep Sony's are notorious for that. He came to their house and did something to the picture tube and poof it was good as new! Only cost like 125.00. They figure pay the 125 now and in a few years get a new flat panel tv after prices come down a bit further.

YOU HAVE MADE MY DAY!!! The repair man is coming Thursday!

The DLP rainbow effect is caused by the way the DLP chip works with the color wheel. The wheel/bulb shine light on the DLP mirrors very fast in three alternating colors. If your eyes are fast enough, or if you do certain things like shift your eyes back and forth across the screen quickly or wave your fingers between your eyes and the screen, you will see rainbow trails. Many people don't notice it, but many people do. And if you do notice it, it can be distracting as hell.
LCD and LCoS rear projection TVs don't have the rainbow effect, but also require the pricey bulb changes.

And yeah Dawn...Panasonic is one of, if not the best plasma manufacturer.
