DH, DD (1.5yo) and I are hoping to go tent camping with friends (hubby, wife and their daughter, also 1.5yo). We have a 3 person tent (which I'm trying to upgrade, but DH is resisting), and our friends have (I think) a 6 or 10 person tent. We'll probably also have a screen tent for the picnic table.

What tent loop would you recommend for us? Do you have a specific site you'd recommend? How would I word the request so that I have a chance of getting it?

We'd probably want to be near a playground, and the pool (if it's not too cold to go swimimng), but not too far from the transportation to the parks.

There are 2 tent loops. 1500 and 2000, to be close to things you mentioned 1500 would fill your needs.

Suggestion that might help your DH re-think his position on the tent. Pitch the tent in the backyard and then make up the beds that all 3 of you would use along with any gear that you need to keep in the tent (including baby items you would need in the middle of the night). Then all 3 of you sleep in it for one night. I'm betting on you getting a new tent.

I say that because my DH and I never had less than a 4 person tent. With the bedding in place and clothing containers in the tent, there would not have been room for another person. When they say it is a 3 person tent, they are thinking in terms of nothing in the tent but 3 people wrapped up in sleeping bags and that is just not practical.

We stayed in 1500 this past November and had a 13 x 13 awning and a 10 x 14 tent.... it was pretty tight and we had one of the largest of the ones in 1500. My recommendation would be... since you are sharing with another family... go with 2000. You can be more spread out and comfortable with space. It is further from the pool... but if you have bikes or a golf cart... no biggie.

We are going back next October and will have two tents plus the awning. We will request 2000 for sure.

I would also do everything you can to convince your DH to go with bigger tent. We had a small 4 man tent that we took for a weekend in the mountains and by the end of the 2nd day....DD and I decided that we hated having to crawl to get inside, bending over the entire time we were in the tent, sleeping on top of each other, no room for bags/lugguage and changing in the tent was impossible. We opted for a cabin style and it is very roomy. For long trips it makes things much less stressful.... DH and I have our own "side" and DD has her own "side". We can walk in without ducking, change, and on rainy days we've had fun just sitting in and playing games. Now, my DH hated it too at first. But he was sold on it after a 10 day trip. When we backpack camp (without children) we have a small 2 man tent that works great... but for family style camping.... we want room. :thumbsup2

If you have multiple tents/awnings, here is another vote for the 2000 loop.

There is a shortcut from the 2000 loop through 900 loop to the Trading Post/Pool area. It helps if you are on the far/backside of 2000. Here is a thread to my trip report with pictures/directions.

we stayed in 1500 loop in March. With our 10 person tent & 10x10 awning over the picnic table there was very little extra space.

I've never posted a picture before so hopefully it shows up. This shows us at the 1500 loop. The white awning legs that you can't see are off the pad.

If your friends have a 10 person you might consider sharing with them. In the tent in the picture we can fit a king size one layer air mattress for two adults and our 3 year old (she sleeps with us), a full size double layer air mattress for the other two adults and a pac-n-play for their 2 year old. There was enough space for our clothing too (for a weekend stay) but it was tight.

Have a great trip!

Thanks for your help! I left a message for my friend asking how big their tent is... In the meanwhile, is there any general idea how big the pad space is? I thought I had read 25' square, but I can't find it anywhere.

Also, what time can we check in? I don't want to go crazy driving thru the night if we can't check in 'til later in the afternoon.

Philadelphia suburb?
Me too!
I'm in Downingtown, where are you?

yikes. I was going to request 1500 but now am thinking twice. We have a 10 X 14 foot tent and a 10X10 screen room that we attach by a little awning. Makes for almost 30 feet. I know we could probably get a little diagonal. Can you move the picnic tables off the pad and on the asphalt?

I live near Kennett Square (where Longwood Gardens is). (You probably wouldn't know the actual town I live in...)

Hi neighbor! :flower3:
You might be surprised!
I have lived here all my life.
I have a friend that has a business just outside of Kennett.
