I've read about Albertsons, Publix, Goodings & Winn Dixie. Which do you choose to shop at and why? I'm asking because when we go back next Jan I want to have it all planned out where I'll be going with directions,etc... I know I'm planning way ahead but am curious about the different stores.

I'll be shipping a box down with some non-perishables since we are particular about our brands, at least DS is. I'd mostly be looking for perishables like milk, yogurt, bagels/wheat bread, some cheese, eggs, produce, fresh chicken/shrimp, frozen pizza and the like. We are pretty healthy eaters and our local grocery store (Wegmans) does an excellent job with the produce and meats so we can be picky. :teeth:

We'll be staying at BWV (1 bdrm) so I'd like to go someplace convenient but would be willing to drive a mile or 2 extra for better quality/selection.

TIA!

Hey there fellow Rochestarian!! I grew up in Rochester and totally understand the whole Wegmans thing. I moved to VA about a year ago and we finally have a Wegmans. You might want to stick to the Super Walmart, but I hear there is a new Winn Dixie, and I haven't been there yet. Goodings is terribly expensive, Publix is ok but I have always stuck to the Super Walmart and gotten great produce. Others might have differing opinions though :goodvibes

agotta-Glad you understand the Wegmans thing! Some of my DH's family is moving to Harrisonburg later this year and we looking into the area as well, about 100 miles or so from Centreville, right? They live in Buffalo now and want to get away from the cold temps & snow.

Thanks for the tip. We have a Super WalMart less than 1 mile from my house in Gates, but I don't go there for produce as it is not nearly as fresh as Wegmans--at least around here. But down there it might be better-thanks!

I know we are trying Winn Dixie when we head down, but we aren't buying produce or anything, just snacky things. My dad loves the new Super Walmart, they are in Henrietta. We now have 2 Wegmans down here, one in Fairfax and one in Dulles (near the airport), but still too far from Harrisonburg :( We are so excited to have it here. My Dh is from Mass and doesn't understand, he says it's just a store :rotfl:

Jan is a great time to go, that is usually when we go. We honeymooned in Jan after our Blizzard Wedding last January. Temps are kinda cool, but we had a great time. Lots of free time at night because the parks tend to close early. We spend a lot of time at EPCOT because they are open till 9 regardless of the season :)

Avoid Goodings as the prices are ridiculous. They have nice prepared foods, but give me a break. They clearly prey upon the tourist folks.

I haven't tried the Winn Dixie, so can't comment on them.

Publix has always been our favorite as their prices are about like at home and they have nice deli stuff. They are sometimes quite crowded.

By next January, the new Super Walmart on 535 may be built. Nothing but signs when we were there in December.

Our first stop is always at Sams Club. If you follow 535 to 192, then turn left, it isn't far. Their gasoline is also a bit less than the norm and they have a liquor store that seems cheaper than any others we've found.

You pass a Super Target before you get to Sams, but I haven't tried it.

JMHO.

Sheila-Thanks for the heads up about Goodings and the possiblity of the new SM! We don't have a Sam's Club membership right now, but maybe we will by then..they just remodeled the local one here and we haven't been over to see it yet. SuperTarget is something we don't have around here, probably like a SuperWalMart with the reg items and then a smallish grocery store?

agotta-We loved Jan too! We were there Jan 04 for marathon weekend and the following week, and even though the weather was cold we really enjoyed it. DH hates the heat so Jan was nice for him! :) Can't wait to go back!

Wegmans, just a store! NOT! Your DH needs an education from Danny (Wegman that is), lol! That's like calling a garbage plate just another take out dinner! :teeth: (not that I eat them anyway!)

I'm ROTFLMAO :rotfl2: about Wegmans!! My DH is from Rochester (Webster) and we went to school near Buffalo (Fredonia) and his folks just moved to Martinsburg, WV to be closer to DH's uncle in Centreville! Holy small world, Batman! We all love Wegman's and my MIL is miserable because they only have Food Lion in Martinsburg. What a huge step down! We don't have Weggies here in Cleveland, but our new Giant Eagle seems to be copying them pretty well.
Yours in produce...

The past couple of trips we have used Winne dixie as they are close and a decent price....

I've used the Super Walmart before but it is just too far and usually is packed to the gills..

I love Publix. I also shop at the Super Wal Mart and the Super Target. The new Super Wal Mart is coming along quickly so hopefully it will be open in the next 6 months or so. 192 is all torn up so getting to the current Super Wal Mart takes some extra time.

Ahhhh, I remember Wegman's. I grew up (till age 12) in Rochester, and my sister still lives there (and shops at, well, you know where....). Anywhoo, I got used to Publix when I lived in FL. And Winn-Dixie. So that is where we used to shop. But this past trip we shopped at Sams Club and Super Target and had great success. Target's prices and selection was great, and we were able to pick up some things that would not have been available at Publix (like hats and gloves!).
