Or....

darkkitchen1.jpg

I need to pick cabinets for the house.

I like the first ones, the lighter cabinets.

I like the first ones 'cause they look like mine. :teeth:
The pic of the second ones is too dark on my computer.

The second one IS dark in real life. I have been in both kitchens.

BUT, it looks more "expensive"

I know what you mean. I prefer light kitchen cabinets becaseu my Mom and MIL both have dark 80's kitchens. I think I have a hard time with dark cabinets because of them! :lmao:

Wow. Hard choice.

The first one looks very bright and cheery and laid back.

But the second one looks more rich.

What is the style of the rest of your house?

I personally would go with the first one but that is the style of my home.

I think I actually prefer the light ones....I just want to make sure they don't look "cheap", lol

I like the lighter kitchen. I can't tell by the picture, but it looks like the stove top is built into the island. Will yours be like that? It looks very similar to the one we have in our kitchen, and it took me a long time to get over worrying that someone would burn themselves on the stove. Ours is ceramic and flush with the counter and it just looks so easy for someone to accidentally touch a hot burner, especially after they've been turned off but are still cooling down. We do have small warning lights, but they could be overlooked.

I have close to the darker, second set, but in a lighter kitchen. The walls make the darker seem even more dark.
Can you do that?

My walls are just about exactly the color of the first kitchen, and the cabinets are closer to the second kitchen. I love it.

My friend has a kitchen similiar to #2. She is always complaining about it being to dark. Cant keep any plants alive and even on the sunniest days, she still have to turn on the lights. IMHO, I like #1 the best.

I like the second, darker cabinets, but it should go with the rest of the house. What style is the rest of the house going to be?

I guess I am in the minority, but I like #2 better. It has a more richer look and I prefer the stainless appliances as well.

We came to the conclusion that it's not just the color of the cabinets that makes the room dark or light, but the amount of contrast between cabinets/appliances/floor/counters. Kinda have to look at the whole picture. Personally I like a light and warm combination, so we just put in maple cabinets with a butterscotch finish (so it's light but rich and warm feeling) and like it. Granite is medium to dark look and stainless appliances. I wanted to walk in and feel welcomed and warm but not dark and that's what we got (thank goodness ;) ). Refrigerators because of their sheer size can often really darken or lighten a room if you do black or white - that really stands out to me in the pictures you've posted.

I like the first one better--it looks lighter and airier--more like a place where I'd like the family to gather.

The second one is very similiar to my kitchen--the thing that helped with the light issue was having a Solatube installed. The kitchen doesn't seem quite as dark anymore.

Oh for crying out loud! We all know you're buying a bigger house. A more expensive house. I don't think anyone here is going to accuse you of being cheap. Buy what you like, you're the one who's going to have to live with it.

I like the second one. My cabinets and fridge look like the first; I can't wait to get a stainless steel fridge. I think the second one looks richer.

I like the cabinets in the second, as long as the kitchen is light enough for them. Also, are the cabinets the same style, in different colors? It's hard to tell from the second picture. I think the first picture looks like a very simple style, and if you want something more "ornate" or fancy, the second one looks that way to me.

My vote is for the first one (lighter cabinets). Dark does look "richer", but to me feels more sterile. The first seems very warm and inviting. I chose lighter cabinets in my house for the very same reason - in fact they look similar to #1. You can always do a dark color on the walls to "richen" in up. I painted a brick red to contrast the lighter cabinets and white appliances. It looks very nice! Question though - can they do the island in the same wood as the cabinets, or does it have to be white?
