The difference is that baker who may or may not know a thing about anything else isn't likely to be handed a microphone on live TV with an audience of millions. And in the event they wind up a finalist on "Spring baking championship", they're not going to use any of that time to talk about race car driving or gardening.

There are plenty of outlets by which celebrities can espouse their views without forcing them on audiences that tuned in for an awards show or all-star game.

I think no matter who you are you should be able to voice your opinion but I don't tune into the Grammy's, Oscars, etc to have you ramrod it down my throat. It's just not what the event about it. But post something on FB..sure fine whatever, say something while out and about and the paparazzi caught it...sure fine whatever. Wear a t-shirt with what your opinion is sure fine whatever.

Some of my favorite moments in award shows have been those where the celebrities voice their opinions. Meryl Streep was the highlight of the night, IMO.

To me, without those moments the award shows would be predictable and dull.

I think the celebrity opinion sharing is a delicate balance. You risk turning off as many fans or viewers as you might gain. Of course they have a right to share their opinion but I tuned in to see them practice their art form. I can easily go elsewhere for entertainment, but I tuned in to view the advertised program and when that's different than what is actually aired, I feel a little cheated. I made an informed choice with which outlet to get my entertainment from according to what was advertised.

I agree. Celebrities speaking up increases the entertainment value to me, no matter what their opinion is. I like a little controversy with my award shows.

Growing up controversy at an award show was Madonna and Britney Spears (ETA: oops forgot about Christina Aguilera) kissing

I agree. They are citizens of the world, and if they choose to make a statement at that time, they should. IMO, that goes for any statement, not just ones I agree with. So I felt that Scott Baio or Nicole Kidman had as much right to say something as Meryl Strreep did.

Not me. If the comment is related to the film, go for it. Boys Don't Cry, Hidden Figures, both good examples of using the opportunity to deliver a relevant message.

But, under most circumstances, they come off like Adam Sandler in The Wedding Singer when he told the father of the bride, "I have a microphone so you will listen to every word I say!".

At least for me it has nothing to do with if I agree with their stance or not. I'm not that kind of person that just up and decides to stop listening to you based solely on the fact that I don't agree with what you are saying.

There is however in my opinion a place and a time. That's why I mentioned I've got no problem with expressing your opinions on FB, with what you are wearing, or when you're just out and about. An awards show where you are there to celebrate those in your profession or the hard work those put into a project is not the place to be shoving your intense dislike for the current president, etc. These are just my opinions of course.

Exactly, there is a time and place for everything. Take Madonna and her speech at the woman's protest. Perfect place for her rant, whether or not you agree with the message.
Meryl Streep receiving an award honoring her work in the profession, not the right place IMO. Now if she as at the DNC and was being honored for her contributions to politics, sure, rant away.

Yes, and if we weren't talking about this subject on this thread I wouldn't be sharing my opinion on it at say someplace like Church, or while riding IASW, while I have a captive audience. Am I free to do it, sure. Am I being an obnoxious jerk when I do, you betcha.

Yes, we are subjected to forum rules, bur if we were not, a lot of posters would go on, and on about politics. The rule was created because political threads would get out of control. Awa shows have no such rules

I was thinking more of the people there, but you are right, one can just change the channel.
However, the point of that comment and what has been posted by others, that you continue to miss, is that there is a time and place for everything.
Awards shows aren't really made to be your podium for your political rants. But really they are celebrities so what should we expect. They don't actually get involved in anything other than "honoring" themselves and standing up on their soapboxes to preach to the rest of us about what we should do.....

No, YOU are the one missing the point that is is YOUR opinion (and those who agree with you) that it isn't the time or place YOUR OPINION. It is not against the award shows to talk about politics, so they do. Why should anyone determine what their speeches are all about?

No, I am fully aware that all we are doing is sharing our opinions here.
We are all just discussing things.
Not sure why you are so worked up, there is no conspiracy here to demand entertainers not be allowed to share their own opinions. Loosen the foil.

But if we all should be able to voice our opinions, no matter what they are, whenever we want to why would such rules even need to exist. Because any time would be the appropriate time right to say exactly how we feel about x,y,z then and not only that I can take as much time as I want because hey I've got people (ETA:watching/paying attention {opps didn't finish the sentence lol}).

I'm not sure if you're coming from the whole "they are trying to silence my voice (meaning well-known people's voices not necessarily your own personal voice)" viewpoint but I assure you that is far from my personal feelings. I just have the thought that time and place do matter.
