Hey I just needed a little advice on compression sleeves, I am training for Goofy and I am having all kinds of trouble with shin splints (and yes my shoes are brand new and fit well, my legs just disagree with my mind on how many miles we should run :rotfl2:) Anyway a few people have recommended compression sleeves, and I thought I would give them a try (I am willing to try anything at this point:confused3) But since they are so expensive I dont really want to buy some and them not work (I spent all my money trying to find shoes that worked :rotfl2:) So I am thinking either 2xu or skins? Anyone have a preference? Also the 2xu have stirrups with them, whats that about??? I am only getting the sleeves not the tights because i would be waaay to hot in tights!

Any input would be awesome thanks :goodvibes

Have you thought about trying kinesiology tape? I know a few runners that use this for shin splints and say it works. I use it for my left knee and it's a life saver. Good luck!

Fisrt don't rule out tights all together - the CW-X Ventilators are ok into the low 70's. - but they also cast a few $$ more.

I am a Skins fan when it comes to compression clothing. They back their products with some research and post it on the web. (though when you trace the research some of it is funded though Skins).

Seriously you cannot go wrong with either product line. I would not expect a 100% miracle with these. If you are having severe splints yuo may need to take some time off to heal up. Not what you want to hear at this time but rest may be your ally.

Note the stirrups are to help keep the sleeve over the lower Achilles.

Thanks coach :thumbsup2

I am not expecting a miracle just something to get me through Jan. Actually swimming is my best ally at the moment, I think it cools and stretches it at the same time and it is really helping but I am hoping the sleeves might give just a little extra support while on the pavement!

Zakismom - I have no idea how to put tape on, is it complicated?

Thanks guys

Kirsty

I am not ZaksMom but you really need to have someone who is really good to train you. Else you are running with funniny looking tape pattern

For one type injury, you should be able to learn for that injury

There is a great video on their website to get you started. I find that its really not hard once you get the hang of it. It is easier to have someone help if you tend to be 'all thumbs,' which does tend to describe me, lol. They are on the list for the Disney Expo and they will tape you so you can see how its done. I am posting the link for their site which also has info on where you can find it locally. Good luck!

OMG :goodvibes thank you for posting this topic!! I am just getting back into running and I too have 2 brand new sneakers that should not have given me problems - HOWEVER I was wrong. I went to my local Fleet Feet and bought a 3rd $100 ish pair of sneakers I am hoping they will help me. The owner tried to get me to buy a pair of those compression things and I thought he was smoking crack :rotfl: now it looks like I should have bought them. I have taken a week off and my right shin is still sore-UGH I am going out today for a slow run to see how I do. I am doing my first 1/2 in March (the princess) so I am able to take some time off if need be or just only do 3 days a week of SLLLLLOOOOOOWWWW runs till I heal a bit more.

Again, thanks for posting this questions!:goodvibes

Give yourself some time to heal, do some cross training. 12 weeks until Princess, so you want to make sure you're feeling better before you up your mileage. See you in March!

Thanks Zakismom :thumbsup2 I ordered some tape and some skins compression socks yesterday, and i will give them a try. OK I will go to that link when I get 3 seconds to myself (maybe during nap time!) and learn how to tape my leg, I was thinking maybe I should just wrap the whole leg in tape, sure I would look like a mummy but it might stop the pain :rotfl2:

Swim-mom - I agree you should give yourself time to heal, the Princess is a long time off and believe me you dont want to be like me 24 days out from a race and hobbling around everywhere. I hope you are able to get the problem sorted out and good luck in your training :thumbsup2

Thanks for the help guys :cool1: and I will let you know if these things help :thumbsup2

Two words: Duct Tape. Tape your entire leg. Your shins will then be the least of your problems. :lmao:

Glad I could help,
Duane

I'm nursing shin splints probably due to running on uneven surfaces and have found that compression socks by 1000mile are really useful. I didn't like the idea of skins because they looked too heavy. I also really found that heat was more useful than cold! Wasn't expecting that, but physio advised me to try it and it did help.

Hope you find something that helps.

I just did a race with compression sleeves I bought from a medical company on amazon. They didn't work for me. They did, however, work beautifully for two of my friends (who are much better runners then I am). Unfortunately there is no one size fits all fix on this. That being said thanks for the KT info E, I'm definitely going to look into this.

well i did run this afternoon, a very SLLLLOOOOWWW 2.67 miles. Not to bad, the sneakers did make a differance but did not solve my problems. I am going to look into the compression socks/sleeves to see if that will help. Now I was also told to that by wearing the socks/sleeves at bed may make a huge differance too - at this point and time anything is worth a try.

I am going to do my Elip tomorrow and run on sat the same route for a SLLLOOOWW run - wont do anymore until I get the shins better. the owner of fleet feet also said that i was running enough --- at this point i am trying everything :) to see what works best!

My own experiement!!!! and I am proud to announce that it works!!!!

Last night, my shins were so sore that I decided to roll them before bed. Then I had a great idea, to help reduce the tenderness --- I grabbed a pair of my husbands dress socks (who is bigger of me) and put them on to sleep in. They were almost up to my knees, but they were snug (not tight) but from knees down it was compressed.

Well, I woke up this morning and my shins feel BRAND NEW!!! So it works and it did not cost me anything!!

I walked in low heels today (had too, it was final week for my students) and my shins were great!

I am going to wear them tonight and then run tomorrow still SLLLOOOWW, so that will be the real test!!

Let me know if anyone else tries it!!
