Where were you on July 4, 1976 for the Bicentennial?

I still have a jar full of bicentennial quarters!

I was 19 back then and still at home. I worked for Sears at that time and wore the Winnie-the-Pooh costume like the one shown in those pictures. What memories!

The only definite thing I remember was being at church. I'm sure there was the usual parade and celebration at the American Legion.

Funny you brought this up! I was just thinking about this this evening!

I was 15. We were living in California, but that summer we took a 5-week road trip. We drove east across the US to a family reunion in PA, and then up the east coast through New England, west across Canada, and then down through Washington and Oregon to home. On the 4th of July itself we were in Shaker Heights, OH, visiting my aunt and uncle. I remember walking from their house to the downtown area, where there was a bandshell and fireworks. Very small-town USA feeling.

My family went to a Bicentennial party at the apartment of a friend who lived in a high rise building overlooking the Hudson River on the Jersey side right near the Lincoln Tunnel. We had a fabulous view of Operation Sail, the flotilla of tall ships that sailed the Hudson River that day and then the amazing fireworks display afterward.

I know we had 19 people on the balcony of her apartment watching the festivities. All the other balconies were loaded too. It's a wonder the building didn't tip over

I was 18 at the time. It's hard to believe that it was 28 years ago already. It was a marvelous celebration of our great nation's 200th birthday.

This is so funny.....at lunch Thursday my dad and I were talking about out trip in 1976! Dad worked for a steel mill and that year he had earned 13 weeks of vacation time. He took 6 straight weeks and we packed up the truck camper and headed west from Indiana. I was 6 1/2 years old and have 2 older brothers. Around the 2nd or 3rd of July most likely when we were in Glacier dad asked the 3 of us if we wanted to go up into Canada. Of course, we jumped on that idea and we spent the 4th of July at a campground in Canada near Calgary. I remember my brothers meeting a couple of cute girls and exchanging addresses with them. From there we went to Yellowstone, Tetons, Yosemite, Redwood, Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, Texas gulf.....and many other places I can't remember.

I was almost 6 years old and living in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. I faintly remember all the hoopla. But when your that age, writing your name with a sparkler is the most important thing on your mind.

Wow, do I feel old. So many not even born or having just been born. Reminds me of a woman in my group at work. We were talking about the Challenger Space Shuttle and she said she just had a vague recollection of it as she was barely 6.

Anyway, I was in El Salvador on a mission.

I was in Germany (husband at the time, was in the Service),,and I remember we (AMERICANS stationed there) got together and formed a line by holding hands,,from one Base to another one,,,which was over twenty miles a part,,,people were asked to go to different stations and spread out from there,,,I still have the picture (SOMEWHERE) that was in the paper...it was a GREAT sight,,,,, HAPPY 4TH TO ALL

That was the day I was due to be born. However I was 10 days late so ended up being born on Bastille day.

I was living in Plymouth, MA. The town had a huge parade followed by fireworks that night.

My parents were with us and my best friend, her DH and kids. I only had my son then (my daughter wasn't born until 1977) and he was about 1 1/2. My friend's son, who was about the same age, was a real terror... always checking out everything. I was afraid that my son would be terrified of the fireworks that night while her's would love them. Instead, it was the other way around.

BTW, that was the last time I can remember seeing set pieces at a large fireworks display. They had the American Flag one and the Washington and Lincoln one. For those of you too young to remember, set pieces stayed on the ground and were usually pictures of something that were made with sparkler type fireworks.

Anyone remember decorating the fire hydrants? To this day I still see people doing that.

We celebrated at the MK in WDW! I was very, very young, but I remember everyone walking around in huge "Uncle Sam" hats. It was exciting.

I was downtown New York with a birdseye view of the fireworks around the Statue of Liberty.

I remember this day very clearly. I was at my cousin's house, celebrating the 4th with their family. What I remember the most about it is listening to the Paul McCartney and Wings album, Band on the Run, over and over again. She had just bought it and we were enthralled. We then went to see the fireworks downtown D.C. - they were spectacular that year. I was 12.
