Where were you on July 4, 1976 for the Bicentennial?

We were ON my FIL 36' Mathews motoryacht on the Hudson viewing OPSAIL just north of the GW Bridge. At night we were by the Statue of Liberty watching the fireworks.

What a remarkable day.

I was on the roof of my cousin apartment bldg, we gathered there every year for the 4th

I was 8 years old and my family was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida. I remember seeing a parade in our town and watching fireworks that evening. I remember it being a festive time!!

I was two months away from being married. Hubby-to-be (and still is) and I had gone to my sister's house in NJ. The plan was to take the Path train to NYC to watch OpSail and the fireworks. Never made it in for OpSail but we did get to NYC to watch the fireworks display.

We were somewhere in Battery Park. We could not hear the music but the display was very memorable. At times we couldn't see Statue of Liberty due to all the smoke.

I also remember being horrified at the mass of humanity making its way back through the streets to the Path train. I had never been in a situation like that before. You HAD to go with the crowd. There was no going against the flow. It scared the dickens out of me and I hung tight to my hubby for fear of losing him.

I was in Philadelphia celebrating with everyone else there!

Hey, us too! We were part of the crowd at the Art Museum and Eakins Oval watching the fireworks!

I was probably in the oddest place. I was in the Marine Corps stationed on Guantanimo Naval Station, Guantanimo Bay, Cuba.

I was 6 yo. I vaguely remember being at home and wearing my brother's Bicentennial basketball shirt and being yelled at for wearing it.:p

I was right here in Philadelphia which was like Bicentennial Central!! The city was crazy with Bicentennial fever!

I was only 7 but I remember it well , I still have the $2.00 bill and the bicentennial quarter, worth today about....well, $2.25! LOL

N. Bailey-you must have been part of the Bicentennial Wagon Train. I rode my horse from the start here in the state capitol to Rochester, NH. Couldn't get any more time off from work! I remember seeing pictures in the newspaper of the wagon train crossing bridges in NY!

As far as myself-I have no idea where I was. I'm sure DH & I were watching fireworks somewhere. That was BC!:hyper:

I was in Kersey, Pa. where I was born and raised. I was 11 years
old and my grandmother had crochet red, white and blue anklets and saddle blanket for my pony. We also had red, white, and blue ribbons in her mane and tail. I was in the local Bicentennial parade, and then entered in the pet parade where I won 3rd place. LOL

I was at the St. Louis Riverfront, under the Arch. It's a little remembered (or cared about?) fact that St. Louis had the second largest crowd in one place on the 4th (second to NYC; larger than DC or Phily). I had just graduated from HS ("the Spirited Class of '76") and was so into it. The St. Louis Symphony played, and with a chorus they did Wilhousky's "Battle Hymn" and the fireworks from the barges on the Mississippi seemed to go on forever. Thanks for bringing back such a great memory!

BTW, does anyone remember the "Bicentennial Minutes" on TV? I'm pretty sure that President Ford did the "minute" on the 4th...my dad took a picture of the TV screen.

Hi from Mississippi everyone!

Well, at that time I was growing up in southeast Arkansas, and had just graduated from high school. I remember that was an Olympic year, and I watched a lot of it on tv. Why would a 17 y/o girl watch the Olympics during the summer you ask? Well, I managed to come down with a horrible case of mononucleosis, and was pretty much wiped out! All I could manage to do was to drag myself into the den where the Olympic coverage was playing nonstop on the tv thanks to my mom! Oh well, I got to see a part of history being made that summer. Otherwise I would have been out cruising in my cute little Toyota!

Hmmm. I was 9...played baseball during the day and that night went to the Brown County Fairgrounds in Aberdeen, SD to watch the fireworks. A good day!

We caught the first boat over to the Statue of Liberty and spent the day watching the tall ships(OpSail)-unbelievable! I graduated from college that year and have a "Bicentennial" sticker on my diploma.
