Count me in for the rash also.

Add me to the leg rash too! I know it's from the heat off of the pavement. And those ugly yellow-eyed flies have the sharpest teeth!

Never had any of this happen to me at Disney. Nock on Wood. However last year while we were in Antigua for our 25th my legs were all bitten up from the sand flies that come out at night. I was a mess for weeks.

Yes, I get this at the beach. So does DD, DH and my mom. It's AWFUL. ITCHY, ITCHY, ITCHY. It's from too much sun exposure. It doesn't matter if you wear sunscreen. I can wear 50 and sit under an umbrella the entire time. I'll still get it. Eucerin used to make a sunscreen that stopped it, but they discontinued it. This year I am going to try a sunscreen from LaRoche Posay to see if that helps stop

On property or off, your chances of bedbugs are the same. Motel 6 or Waldorf Astoria, chances are the same. Bedbugs don't care about money or location.

Some time ago, I dealt with an infestation of bed bugs in DBF's apartment. He was mortified and disgusted, and we lost a LOT of stuff. He's a clean freak, but his neighbors were not, and these things came through the walls - after months of fumigation, they disappeared for a year then CAME BACK. Horrible time.

One of the easiest ways to tell if it's bedbugs - look for the telltale pattern in the bites. Each individual bug usually makes three bites in a row - experts call it breakfast, lunch, and dinner. These are often on the lower leg / ankle or on the back. Also, if you scratch said bite, sometimes a very small hole will appear - this is also a telltale sign of bedbug bites.

My beau and I check every hotel for bedbugs before moving into our room ever since the infestation. We don't even bring in our bags until we've done our sweep. These are impossible to get rid of and extremely expensive if you bring them home!! We go into the room, pull the fitted sheets off the corners of the bed, and look through ALL creases, ALL the way around, top and bottom of mattress; we remove pillow cases and examine the pillow creases for bugs or bedbug bloodstains - we then remove any chair cushions or padding and examine all creases closely. Then we examine the bottom of the bed where the frame reaches the ground.

If you'd ever had them, you'd know that this preliminary "bedbug hour" is the smallest possible step. Fumigation is over a thousand dollars in your own home (at minimum), and doesn't even guarantee they won't hibernate for 18 months and come right back. We will never, ever stay away from home without checking our room before inhabiting it, and if we find anything suspicious we will immediately go to the front desk and change rooms.

Can someone please tell me where to write about a BAD experience at POP last week? In bad, I mean, I am sure that my family was bitten by bed bugs, went to the front desk and they REFUSED to move us since we didn't actually SEE any bugs on the sheets. We all have bites and rashes and I am FURIOUS!! The front supervisor and CM was NO help. I asked when the manager was on duty - always the next day. Never there when I went down there. This is coming from a Dis'er who loves Disney and (use) to love POP. Help!

I hate to say it but it's far, FAR more likely that this was pavement rash or insect bites from somewhere else and not BB bites.

Disney has a system for detecting these in the rooms and it's pretty spot on. I know myself I was convinced that I had bedbugs in my room once at All Stars.. but I was wrong. Way wrong. I had pavement rash.

And if the problem went away when you went home that's even MORE confirmation that it was pavement rash and NOT bedbugs.

BB would travel home with you and you would still be being bitten on a nightly basis. The odds of you staying a BB infested room and returning home without them - is virtually zero.

If you're still getting this problem after a week or more at home.. then yeah, you got BB.

I'm wondering if they aren't fire ant bites.

I want to add... I did get fire ant bites while outside on this recent trip.. fortunately not very many... but I got 'em.. and man oh man was that NOT pleasant.

OP here - sorry I haven't been on - baseball season is busy! I did write disney, both email and hard copy letter. Haven't heard anything. We promptly washed all our clothes and the luggage was put in the garage. It is still there. I may just pitch it - just in case. The bites are way better. But, as a previous poster wrote - yes, we did all have small "holes" on the bites. They did start on our legs/ankles. Itched like crazy. I don't think they are at our house since we all are getting better. As someone else said - they probably didn't want to move us to infest another room. I am still disappointed by the lack of caring about this issue. I went to the front desk and called (3 times at least each). Will I boycott Disney? Nope. Love that mouse too much. Will I stay at POP again? Nope. Not because of the bugs, but because of the lack of action. We will stay on-site - just will go somewhere else.
This whole trip we just seemed to encounter people that had no manners. That isn't Disney's fault. The reason I talked to CM's about some of these encounters (smelly feet guy for example), I always thought it was "no shirt, no shoes, no service".

Thanks for the info! Your post has made me feel a lot better. No - we haven't had any more bites. Maybe it was fire ants - it wasn't all rash for sure. It's like the rash went around the bites. (Sorry if TMI!!!) More of a deep redness around the bites.

When I looked up how to check your room for bed bugs it says that it is hard to actually see a live bug as they are great at hiding, so I don't know how POP expected you to be able to find one. I think I would have parked my behind in the lobby and refused to move until someone did something about it.
We plan on inspecting all of our rooms on our upcoming trip before we bring anything into the room.
Has anyone done this and brought it to the front desk's attention? If so, what was the response?

Very educational thread! I am buying some "pads" to take with us on the next trip! Never really thought those would be on the check list - but they are there now.

So you use this on the mattress?? All the way around?
And the pillow?

Bedbugs are my worst fear, I think...bug-wise. We have never had them but my dh does property management and one of the tenants brought in BBs. Horrible! Horrible! Nearly impossible to get rid of. They can hibernate for 3 years without eating. I mean, how freaky is that?! Super super expensive to get rid of. Shudder.

Responding to a couple of other recent questions: no, you wouldn't likely see the bugs themselves, but you might see signs of them - reddish or black spots in the mattress edging, 'skins' picked up with whatever adhesive method you chose... Bedbugs are annoying, sure, but Walt Disney World does care, and they DO try to inspect on their own. You're truly unlikely to find bedbugs in your room because, well, they're unlikely to be there - not because you just can't find them. But if you DO suspect bedbugs, go to the Front Desk. Trust us, no hotelier wants them. They'll investigate.

I got bit by a fire ant. I'd *heard* of these things before. Read a Dave Barry article about them, too. But I never think like a normal person and it never even crossed my mind. I just went walking around barefoot - La, la, la, - not worried about tiny things that cause massive ouchies.

Then I got out of a small pool at POR and ZING! The pain zipped through me like I don't even know what. Thought I stepped on a yellow jacket or something. Ouch. Geez, that hurt.

Some ice, some Cort-Aid and a couple of days - no problem. But it sure screwed up the rest of THAT day. I don't even like to think about it now.

OP, whether or not your complaint is valid, you might as well address the letter to God as anyone at Disney. In fact, your chances with God are probably better.

Disney isn't big on fixing stuff. Take it from the girl who got a crap view after PAYING for a water one. Give up. Some day they'll do something nice (like give you a water view you didn't pay for) and it'll even up.

I just wanted to let you know that I called BWV the day I said I did. And I asked to talk to the Housekeeping Manager. She was AWESOME!!! I told her what had happened to me, some of it was in my resort notes, being I went to the ER and the manager was involved. She had the exterminators in that room ASAP, and do a complete check thru out. There was no BB, But I also had the hole in the middle of my bites. She was so nice and called me back to make sure I was ok. I am glad I called! I did not want someone else to go thru what had happened to me! We also noticed that my porch door was not shut. and I never tu=ouched it, so chances are I got bugs from them coming in!!!
