I'm thinking of selling my Canon 20D body and upgrading to the 40D. Any advice on where to get the most money for my camera. I've looked at what's selling on e-bay and it looks like they're going for less than $500....

Also, looking for the 40D....so many websites that offer them are bait & switch.....sell you the stuff that should come with it, but charge you 2x as much.....how do you know who to trust?

Where can I sell/buy that can be trusted?

no help on the selling side but for buying

bh photo, beach camera, buydig, perhaps ritz online. I would seriously suggest sticking one of these myself.

I have both bought and sold with KEH.com, and never had a problem. They will give you a preliminary quote range, then if you want to sell it to them you ship it, they will evaluate it completely (which if you are buying used from them you know that it has been pretty well looked over), and then give you a final quote (may take 2 weeks after they get your equipment - not unusual, and not to worry). Once they have given the final quote they will ask if you want to accept it, if not they will ship your equipment back to you at their expense. I recently sold them my old Minolta Maxxum stuff, and their quote was $200+ over the next highest buyer.

They are a big enough place that they put out a monthly 70 page catalog of what they have.

For buying new I stick pretty much to B&H (they also buy used, but at the time that I was selling my stuff they were overloaded with used Minoltas, so would not quote, which doesn't bother me - that's still a good honest answer.)

If I was going to sell, I'd do it on one of the photography boards I belong to (ILP, DWF, OSP).

For buying, I go to amazon first, just cause we have a prime account and that $4 overnight shipping is great. Otherwise, b&h. I've heard goodthings about keh.

Are there other places other than KEH that buys used equipment?

Thanks for the info....I'm really finding alot of scammers out there! Scarey stuff!!!

There is another place that specializes in buying used equipment that I saw in the back of one of the photography magazines, name escapes me right now, but they were the one that their quote was way lower than KEH's. Most of the big name photo stores have used departments, but remember, their primary business is new, so they don't want to be overstocked in yesterday's new. I asked for quotes from B&H and Adorama, both replied promptly and politely that they were overstocked in what I had to sell. Like I said earlier, I don't have a problem with that - it was honest, and they handled it professionally (which has been the case with all of my dealings with B&H, Adorama, or KEH). All of the places that I asked for a quote had a very nice and efficient system set up for submitting your list of equipment. And again, with KEH, I have both purchased used equipment from them, and sold used equipment to them. Much less muss and fuss than eBay, Craig's list, or whatever else. Best of luck.

B&H Photo buys used equipment but I think they offer pretty low. As for selling, ILP (www.ilovephotography.com) is a great place to sell if you are a member there. ALWAYS check the BBB website before buying from any less reputible online store...if it sounds too good to be true it probably is!
Good luck!

i think adorama sells used as well...but i kind of wonder if you'd get much more for a 20d than that( might be wrong) considering it's 2 generations old...
it seems like the used stuff on fredmiranda goes really fast if it's a popular item...maybe check there and see what 20ds are going for if you haven't yet. KEH was low on my 28-135 when i was thinking of selling it( ended up keeping it and like it now, was just exasperated at the time since i had so many problems with the first one) and i was thinking of ebay but to me that is such a gamble. you could also put it on craigslist but that is kind of the same to me, lots of phony calls who just want you to send it to them in return for a bogus money order...you might be better off just keeping your 20d as a backup or see if a local camera shop will do some kind of trade in..i know the dodd camera by me isn't much more than online and they sell used stuff( never sold them any so no idea how fair the price is)

As far as reputable dealers, check www.resellerratings.com and just type in the name of the company you want to deal with. For the most part, this is a nice acurate way of telling the bad companies. Most people will leave a bad report before leaving a good one. I agree with the beachcamera.com, buydig.com, and B&H photo as VERY reputable and trustworthy companies that I would buy from again and again.

Also, I agree with Jan that you will most likely not see much more than $500 for a used 20D. In fact, I would be surprised if you got that. The only way you could get that is on ebay or another direct sales type website. To sell it to B&H or KEH would not be worth it to you if you want $500 or more for it as they sell them for $500 or less used. Therefore they probably buy for much less than that.

To sell i would check out photography-on-the.net/forum/ and dgrin.com, you can also check out fredmiranda.com but in order for you to post in there buy and sell you need to join and pay a fee to post. Most sites have some sort of feedback thread somewhere and you can checkout buyers and sellers. This past week i sold 2 lenses(Canon 70-200 f4 and a Canon 70-200 f4 IS) and a camera bag to pay for a lens(70-200 f2.8 IS) that I bought on a forum used and had no problems, i was paid quickly and received my lens quickly with no problems.

As for buying i would stick with well know sellers like B & H, Amazon even Dell. Dell may charge a little more but I have to say there returns are great. When I got my 30D from them it did not want to focus correctly with any lens, called them up and they arranged for me to get one next day air and I just sent them the bad one back with no problems.

I would look at craigslist. I have sold some items there, and has worked out well for me. All transactions are in cash, and people come to you to get the items. Not sure where you live, but it might be worth a look.

Thank you all so much for the info!! I'll be checking into some of these locations today. I know I'm not going to get much for it, but if I could get $500, that would give me enough to go ahead and get the 40D. (Even though I'm still researching it....I'm pretty sure that's the one I want.)

Thanks again, I'll let ya know what the outcome is.

Do you have local photo shops?

Our area is down to one good photo store. I used to buy from another store/chain but they went out of business.   Had great service from them over the years, went to order the D200 and they where no more.

I just took my old Canon and Nikon film equipment and traded it in. The Canon was not worth much since it was 20 years old. I got enough to buy a new SB800 flash. I checked out B&H Photo to see what the equipment was selling for and figured I would get half which is what happened. I supposed I could have sold it on eBay, Craigslist, etc but not worth the hassle. Went in spent 20 minutes looking at the equipment, took my order for a new lens and I walked out with the SB800.

Try local if you can. Some things you can buy mail order but trying to buy something like a photo bag without seeing it is very hard. I bet I spent 2-3 hours looking for a new bag. Happens every time a new bag is needed and I know have 5 bags. :rotfl: Sad thing is I could see a new bag if I ever buy a big lense or more flashes... :scared1:

Well, so far Beach Camera has the best price for buying the 40D....unless I go through e-bay....which scares the hell out of me.....and selling....I have a co-worker that may want to buy it....but again, I would like $500 for it. I'll call the local store tomorrow and see if they do the trades or purchases.

thanks for all the info....I've found alot of info from the websites ya'll have posted on here!

FWIW, our local Craigslist currently has a Canon 20D (body only) for sale for $500. I have no idea if that's the usual going rate, but someone is trying to get that. :)

eBay is probably the place to go if you want to get top dollar.

Beach Camera is generally great. I had my K20D preordered through them but they were a little slow to get them in stock and I eventually bought through Amazon instead. I did buy my K100D and *ist DL through Beach, as well as a couple lenses and a Fuji point-n-shoot, and had great results with all those purchases.

There are two 20D's on my local Craigslist for $700....both of them with lenses though. One has an 18-135 and the other an 18-55.....
