Where to find reasonable bed sets for Tween

DD had a hard time finding a neon green color at Home Depot with the paint samples. We finally found 12 x 12 scrapbook paper and hung them on each wall, so she could "see" what each wall would look like. The color-blocking was my idea. If you decide to do this...send me a PM. It's a lot of work, but I love the final look of it.

I wasn't sure all of the colors would work, but in the end, it all came together. DD had planned on lime and aqua for the quilt, which is why the walls are those colors. She changed her mind on the quilt, then refused to change the walls. My best hint is look for a comforter that has many colors in it. It will be easier to match colors. Sorry there is no picture of the aqua wall. Her dance pictures are there and I don't know how to blur her face. The spots are from my flash on the colorblock pic. The picture frame on the lime wall has no pictures in it. We hung it first and are still waiting for her to figure out "who" gets to go in the frame. :rolleyes1

I think your DDs room looks great- love the color blocking! And I think the colors work well together.

My DD wants her room updated for her 9th Birthday in October. She has chosen navy blue and pink as her colors. I think that will be pretty but I'm having a hard time finding any bedding that will work.

My ds (now 11) had his room re-done in neon green last fall. We found virtually everything for the room at Target -- we shopped the "college" stuff, and found bedding, a great chair, a lamp, bins, giant pillow, a cute ottoman -- you name it, if it goes in a room they have it! Yes, the walls are scary bright, but since dh wasn't springing for new carpet, we have blue so the entire room doesn't hurt your eyes! It's just paint, that's the least expensive remodel accessory.

poohbear8- your colorblocking looks AWESOME. DD loves the effect. i'm not sure if we could pull it off in her room but i do love how your DDs room looks.

i'm excited to get started on DDs room.

We are in the slow process of redoing DD6's room, although she'll be 7 by the time we finish. :rotfl: Her room now is lavender w/ floral accented furniture. I am trying to sell the furniture to fund the room redo. We bought the bedding from Target. She wanted her room pink. Not pastel, not neon, just bright pink. We decided on orange (cantaloupe color) for a second color.

She found a quilt and sheets at Target and it happened to be on clearance. Quilt $30 and sheets were $10. The set is called Tropical Flip Flop. It is almost like a fun patchwork type print w/ tropical flowers, plaids, and tiny flip flops on the quilt. Soooo cute! Colors are pink, orange, bright green, bright blue. We are going to paint her walls the lt orange color and she will be getting white furniture. Then a lot of the accents are going to be pink. We got her the desk last week since school had started and she has a pink desk chair and pink desk lamp. Then we found some small baskets (size of square Kleenex boxes) at Big Lots in bright green and pink. She uses them on her desk for storage stuff. I can totally visualize it when it's all done and it's going to look so good!

Problem is, it seems like this quilt set never even existed at Target. I can't find it ANYWHERE online, including ebay. I was hoping to find the accent pieces for it. So now I have to get creative and find tropical/luau/surfing/Hawaii type things to decorate! Any suggestions anyone? :confused3

Try looking at the bath sections of Target, Walmart, & Bed, bath & Beyond. I think they have beach or flowers. You can probably find a trashcan that would work.

You can buy at Home Depot paintable outlet covers and light switches, so you can design your own.

If you can't find a trash can that will work, you can use a sharpie and design your own. Trace a flower from the sheets in pencil, then color it in. I did this for DD's old room. She had a jungle theme and I had colored the trashcan & ceiling fan blades with zebra stripes. I bought a stencil from Michael's and just stared at it as I went along. You can find Hawaiian stencils also, so that is another idea for you.

If anyone is going to try the color block here is what I learned. It really does look good, but it is A LOT of work. (but I'd do it again if she asked) What took the longest was the measuring and I still managed to mess it up! Be sure to measure from the top of the baseboard not the floor. DD's wall has 8 spaces and the middle strip is in the middle. They are off by an 1" or so, but not enough to tell on the sides.

Once the blue tape is put down, I went over it with an old gift card to smooth it down. Then I took a foam brush and painted on a coat of wood sealer. That wall alone took several days to complete since I had to tape off the stripes to paint white, then sealer, then white paint, then remove the tape, then retape for the walls, add more sealer, and finally add the colors, but not all at once. :sad2:

While removing the tape, I found the best way to pull the tape so it was almost flat against the wall. So pull it down, then back, so it is almost on top of itself. Pull slowly and have an exacto knife handy. I didn't have any issues with the paint bleeding, but had to touch up where the tape ripped off a small piece of the colored paint. I did those with a small paintbrush.

Hope this helps someone.:thumbsup2

Couple o' things

Overstock has a ton of good choices.

Marshalls/TJ Maxx have some VERY nicely made quilts. More sturdy than the KMart/Walmart ones. I think Target may be okay. You want them to last through several washings. But if you're getting it for a full-size bed, get a queen size because it WILL shrink after washing/drying...but when they're ready for a change, the quilts will always come in handy for picnics or keeping warm on the couch.

Try to get white curtains, bedskirts, shams...sheets if you can get by with it. They will be able to transition okay through other paint colors, bedspread/quilt/duvet changes. White sheets (get some good ones) can be bleached. Though I get a few throw pillows to match the bedding set.

I've gone with duvets and covers on both my girls beds. Easy to keep things nice and clean since it just comes off and I don't have to stuff it to get it in a washer, plus it dries quickly. They're easy to make with two flat sheets (same pattern or one pattern and the other solid) if you want something unique. I did this with the white with purple toile Disney Princess sheets I found on clearance at the Disney store. You would need the full size to make a twin cover. King for a full or queen....might be able to get a queen set to work on a full one. I might make them a set for Christmas. And I found a queen sheet that has girly stuff on it (lipstick, hair items, jewelry, etc) at Goodwill the other day for $2 that I'm going to make another cover.

I have to show you this other one at JCP. I loved it when I first saw it, but I didn't see the green in it, so I didn't think it would match well enough.

However, if you zoom in, you'll see it there :-)

I am redoing my DD9's room so that she can share it with her 4-year old sister. I love how this one is reversible so they can each have a different coordinating look!

I showed it to my DDs who LOVE it, so I think we have a winner!
