I've seen some coolers, some caps, some shirts, etc around. Where do these things come from? We got the initial bag but I would feel funny using it as a ballcap.

It's free at the parties - we've gotten hats (3 different ones), pins, and water bottle holder/coolers.
You can also buy stuff in gift shops.
We've also - occasionally - gotten free stuff at check in. We got a 15 year DVC anniversary pin a few years back and carved wooden giraffe magnets on our last stay at AKV. They sent 15th anniversary giclee prints to all members a few years ago & we got the tote-bag at purchase and when we added on.
Swag at the parties and promotional events is often free--won in raffles etc. In addition, the stores at the DVCs themselves usually sell hats, pins, golf shirts etc. with a changing stock of DVC or resort-specific logos.
At Member Day at HH I won the gift basket with all kinds of great DVC stuff. A sunshade for the car, small backpack and a travel mug. There were other things as well but all I can remember right now.
I want to add that at the weekly member meetings, they don't exactly pass things out by the handful. Typically each attendee will get one or two small items--a cap or a pin--something along those lines. Other prizes are awarded to those who participate in the event by answering trivia questions, win a raffle, etc.
Just didn't want to leave folks with the impression that they'll leave the member meetings with an armload of DVC merchandise.
Now on the cruises, it's a different story. That's where you can fill your suitcase with stuff.
On the cruise you can go to member events and win swag. We won a beach bag, and was given a 15 anniversary pin for wearing our hats on the beach. The hats, magnet, and lanyards are left as welcome home gifts on the first day of the cruise.
