We sail later this month and would like to figure out how to get a fish extender. Can anyone tell me where they got one? Also any help with door decorations would be wonderful. I am not the most creative gal out there.

Most people make them with just a piece of backing fabric and add fabric to create the pockets. They then buy extenderpoles at the top. The fish extenders is a DIS thing, so if there are not a lot of DISers on your cruise, you will not see many. They started with a Secret Santa and Halloween exchange. Since then many DISers keep it going among their cruisemates to exchange little goodie bags and treats throughout the cruise. The DIS cruisers that organize this prior to their cruise are soooooo cool. I have seen pictures and goodies that have been exchanged among cruisers and they have been awesome. So, I hope this answers your question. Happy cruising.:hippie:

atinkerbellmom is right. If you haven't connected with anyone from the DIS going on your cruise, you will not need a fish extender (you can make one anyone, of course). I purchased mine on ebay - no talent for making anything here. It was listed as a 4 pocket door hanger or something along those lines. A far as door decorations are concerned. Check out this link http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1363902. Pat does the most wonderful designs! Put your last name or room number on them so they do not get stolen. Buy some magnetic paper at an office supply store (Staples was were we got ours). Save the design to your computer and print them. You can trim them if you want or just stick them on your door as is. Have fun with it. I think the door magnets were alot of fun. Plus it makes it easy to find your stateroom.

My mom and I are getting ready to attempt making 5 for our cruise. Here are the directions that we're using as a basis for our pattern. I think we're going to go with 8" wide and 28" long using 4 pockets that about 6" deep.

If we're successful, I'll post back to let you know . . . hopefully with photos.

Here's a photo that I just took of fish extenders that mfabre and I made for our upcoming cruise.

I used the directions linked above. I made my pattern 9" wide by 28" long for the front/back and the felt used as an interfacing. Hindsight . . . I would use 9 x 26" for the felt and not place it at the top so that you could make a casing to run a wooden dowel at the top. The felt makes it too thick, especially if you use flannel for your material as I did.

The pockets were 6" x 9".

I used a 3/8" seam allowance and 1/4" for basting.

The designs on the pockets were iron-ons that I made from clipart that I found online in the Creative Designs forum here at the disboards. The name idea is from Pat in that forum. The "what happens at sea stays at sea is a triplefigs design.

What would I do differently . . . not use black material but matching the red was impossible.

It was really easy!

None of these ideas are original and are a culmination of things I've seen on the disboards in various forums.

I know WHAT they are but why are they called fish extenders?

Because they hang on the fish (actually a mail holder) outside your stateroom door, thus extending the fish...

so it's an over the door hanger that you hang up outside your room?
And what types of goodies do you leave for each other?

Just being nosey I guess....

When we cruised in August, we received lots of great gifts from our dismeet group. We received magnets from different states, a cd of DCL music, personalized DCL M&M's, pirate and princess stuff - notepads, pens, pencils etc. and other item. It was alot of fun to give and the kids had a great time looking to see if they had received gifts. Enjoy.

why does you fish need to be any bigger than it is???

(sorry, i had to...)

We didn't have a fish extender, but here is a picture of the fish and the front of our door:

I also bought one on Ebay. It was made and shipped from Hong Kong, but no worries, it looks great!

I bought another one on Ebay that was originally from the Disney store. It is brand new. It was sold as a beanie bag holder.

Target also has great gifts in the $1-2 section from Disney's Cars and Princesses.

When you bought it on ebay did you search for "fish extender" or something else?

Thanks!

I searched "Disney pocket" tonight and found some on the 1st page. They have Lilo and Stitch and Winnie the Pooh. I even saw a cute Stitch passport holder...I have to stay away from online shopping...I'm addicted!

Hi there,

Easiest to get on e-bay as a door hanger......they are there with Mickey Mouse or Winnie the Pooh decorations. Worked like a charm on our Wonder Cruise This past August.

Will use again on our next cruise Aug 2009...Magic 7 day.
