Today at MK BTMRR broke down. No news there. But, interestingly, I received this email:

"FastPass+ Change Notification

Hello, L.

We're sorry, your previously confirmed FastPass+ selection for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad® from 11:40 AM to 12:40 PM on 02/02/2014 needs to be changed because the experience is temporarily unavailable.

As a replacement, you may now visit any one of the following FastPass+ experiences on 02/02/2014, starting at 11:40 AM through anytime during normal Theme Park operating hours (Valid Theme Park admission is required and your FastPass+ selection cannot be redeemed during Extra Magic Hours):

Experiences*
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad®
Pirates of the Caribbean®
Haunted Mansion®
Tomorrowland Speedway
Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor®
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin®

Read it on the plane going home...how late did they finally inform you?
 
Oh, sorry not to have made that part clear, especially since I meant this to be a positive … Actually, the notification was beautifully timely: about halfway into the return window, so would've been really useful. Entirely my own fault for not thinking to look, and for also having scheduled our last half-day in the park so tightly …

To me this is a great innovation that ought to be genuinely helpful … if you know to check and don't have to fly home! (And yes my arms are still tired.)

I got this e-mail when TT broke down, but I got it prior to my FP+ return time. Did your e-mail come before your return time and you ended up reading it later, or did they actually send the e-mail several hours after your return time?

Interestingly, EE broke down during my FP+ return time and I did not receive an e-mail. I also did not end up getting to ride since it was my departure day. Sad.
 

That happened to us twice last trip. We did not get the email either time. Each time our FP+ just disappeared from MDE. I went to customer service the first time and they explained the "open" fastpass system when a ride goes down. The second time our FP+ magically disappeared, we knew what it was.

~I totally agree with you that Magic Bands and FP+ are a great invention! This isn't some draconian effort on Disney's behalf to ruin everyone's vacation.

~Anyway, thanks so much sharing your experience -- this valuable information will surely be helpful for those of us with upcoming trips! :wizard:

~And for the record, Disney has always done this when rides were down. So, I'm glad to see this measure hasn't changed and is now implemented into FP+.:goodvibes
 
It almost sounds like, from the wording, you can just turn up later at the attraction when they reopen instead of rescheduling - since with something like BTMRR, there might not be another time available.

Ice up those arms ;)
 
Yep - "pick another ride or just come back later" is exactly what the CMs were verbally telling folks as they turned them away. Not sure they volunteered the info, but it seemed freely given when folks mentioned they had a current FP+.

I did hear this b4 and am lucky did not happen to us in December. Appreciate the post for it is a great reminder for all !
 
We received this message 2x during our last visit. We had our MDE app on our phones and checked them often for wait times so the notifications were caught quickly. I hope Disney fixes the glitches in the MDE app--we found it very helpful while in the parks with just the occasional annoyance when it misfired.

Yes that is exactly what it is (or at least it was when we used it). We couldn't reschedule it since we only had 2 on our MDE. We just walked up to whatever ride we wanted and "pretended" we had a scheduled FP+. The mickey turned green just like normal.
 
I'm gladd you posted this. It fixes the only problem we had with FP+ on our Nov trip.

We had a Test Track FP+ when it went down. Our FP+ was from 1-2. The ride came back up at 1:30 and we got in line. When we got to the scanners, it didn't work. The attendant said we didn't have a FP+ for this ride. I checked in MDE and it was gone. I then checked email and it said it was cancelled because the ride went down and we had to go back and schedule another FP+. Test Track was no longer available for the day. That was our only glitch. I'm sure I wasn't the only one that complained.

This is good to know. It's nice that you can choose other rides. Last time when we were at EPCOT- Mission Space was down.....we had regular fastpass and were told to try again later. They didn't give us any other options.....MS did come back online so it was no biggie.
