When you arrive/take ur bedspread off, what...

And for Nurse.Nancy...my Mom always said if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all...so Happy Easter to you...I will keep my germophobia thoughts to myself...

I think NurseDarcy was trying to educate not be nasty.

I travel a few times a year. DH and I both sit on the bedspreads and sleep on the sheets that come with the room. We don't wipe down any surfaces. I have never gotten sick at WDW or any other vacation. DH has gotten bronchitis three times at WDW but his smoking is to blame, not the room that we stay in.

I don't think taking the bedspread off has to do with being a germophobe. They don't wash them between guests! People sleep on top of them possibly without clothing. Adults have relations on them and they don't get washed. Babies nasty diapers are changed on beds. I don't want to be sitting on any of that. I am not a germophobe. Kids get sick, adults get sick, it happens. I don't want to sleep under your body fluids. Ever.

I'm with you. I'm not a germaphobe either. I purposely do not use antibacterial handwash at home. I try to keep the antibacterial cleaning stuff to a minimum too. I work in a hopsital and I am around germs ALL THE TIME. BUT, I will not sleep on, under a near a bedspread that is not washed betweeen guests. There are bodily fluids on those spreads (and not just the poo and pee variety if U know what I mean). I don't want to be exposed to other peoples bodily fluids.

The place to be careful is public bathrooms... I see people all the time either not wash their hands or rinse with no soap, or just poorly wash. I wash my hands thoroughly and don't touch anything without using a paper towel to turn off the faucet, open the door, etc...

This. I was in our grocery store and watched a woman put soap on her hands and then just rinse it off, no scrubbing involved. Then she walked out and got a cart and used the antibacterial cart wipes provided :confused3.

Unfortunately.. yes there is a harm in that in the long run. You see.. all the use of these anti-bacterial this and anti-microbial that.. will eventually.. create 'superbugs' that are resistant to those items which currently do a great job of killing them.

We've seen this in hospitals to a degree with infections that are extremely resistant to both anti-biotics AND the typical cleaners used to kill them.

TV does a great job of grossing us out with multi colored images of germs on phones, soap pumps and whatever else.. but good grief. WHY do I care if the soap pump has germs on it?? I'm about to wash my hands within seconds of touching it. And the Johnson & Johnson's and Proctor & Gamble's of the world do a great job of creating a market for sprays, wipes, soaps and even furniture waxes (yes furniture waxes) that kill 99% of live bacteria in lab tests.

Unfortunately, few of us use the techniques they used in the lab to clean our home/hotel room/child's toys etc.

I find the whole thing a touch ridiculous.

Anyway.. maybe not tomorrow.. but the continued and widespread use of these things WILL create "super" bacteria that aren't going to die easily. I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but I do realize that this is how these things work.

That's the harm.

Long story short.. they are washed every 'few' guests is my guess. That means not typically between EVERY stay.

If you have concerns about the bedspread, call housekeeping and they will bring you a clean one.

I said the exact same thing after I saw the commercial for the hands free soap dispenser, who cares if there are germs??

I think a lot of the world has gone antibacterial crazy. Most of the bacterial being killed are the good bacterial. You are used to the bacteria that you are exposed to constantly. Procedures that we do sterile in the hosptial don't necessarily have to be done sterile when done in your own home, because a person is used to the bacteria in their own home and it doesn't pose a problem.

By killing all that bacteria all the time, a person's body isn't allowing themselves to build up that natural immunity. Being exposed to bacterial isn't the evil thing that some make it out to be.....

JoShan1719 - I do know this for a fact. My mother was a housekeeper at a hotel and I worked in a large Las Vegas casino hotel for 4 years. The housekeepers only remove the spread to change the sheets. The blanket and spread are used again. You don't know how many guests have used it before you or the last time they were washed.

Personally, with all the hotels I have stayed in over the years I have never seen a housekeeper cart with piles of bedspreads on it. Sheets, toilet paper, little bottles of shampoo, yes, but never a bedspread to change.

I'm not saying what they are doing is wrong. I know the time factor to get rooms cleaned is tight. If you continually wash the spreads they fade and don't look fresh and new. I just find it icky and will fold the spread down to the bottom of the bed and then fold the blanket and top sheet down so I sit on the clean sheets I will be sleeping on. It's a personal thing and everyone can choose to do what they want.

As an airline pilot I stay in a lot of hotels in different countries and our company has advised us to wipe the toilet handle, sink handles, door knobs and remote control with a clorox (sp?) wipe. Many of our pilots were getting sick, apperantly most people don't wash their hands while staying in a hotel after going to the washroom. I know it sounds gross, but I do wipe those now in the hotels...I won't tell you what was found on most tv remotes, but think csi with uv light.

Wow - I travel all the time, and have never worried about the bedspread. I happily use them without a care.

I mean really- so maybe newlyweds had sex on the blanket two days ago. Who cares?

I admit my husband sometimes throws himself on the bed after a shower - naked. He is still alive.

Germaphobes creep me out way more than the blankets.

:rotfl:Ha ha ! A woman after my own heart!!!

We also travel alot and to be honest we've never worried overly about how clean the bedspread is! As long as it looks and smells clean - why worry!

Us to! My kids have crawled on and slept on and chewed on more things in more rooms than I can even remember and many rooms not nearly as clean as Disney! and guess what my DS who did this the most had his first prescription for an antibiotic this fall at 11 since he was 18 months old.
The body needs the good "germs" it picks up and has on it, it also needs to practice killing the semi-bad germs so it can do the job when it really needs to.
It is going to be very scary when all these kids of germaphobes meet the super germs that are being created from this overly clean/paranoid generation.

We were staying at the Pop Century in early February for 5 days. The morning we checked out - outside our door was a large clear bag with all the new linens for our room as we were checking out. As it was a clear bag I could see there were new sheets, blankets and bedspreads.

Now this is something I do not worry about and have never taken a bedspread off when checking into a resort - but I figured the people on the Dis would be interested as I know this topic comes up alot. I am only sorry I did not take a picture of it.

You are absolutely right..I know several Mousekeepers around the World & bedspreads are changed after each guest :laundy: I always bring the Clorox Wipes with me though for the things that a pp mentioned including the phone and that TV remote :scared1:

People, the bedspreads and blankets are not changed after every guest. If they were rates would be so high no one could pay them.

All hotels do this, they change them out as needed, accidents, torn, etc. which is why you see the bagged ones sometimes in the housekeepers carts.

They change the sheets after every guest but not the bedspreads and blankets.

I have asked this question many times of management at Disney resorts and they have all given the same answer. Once a month unless needed before then.

If you are going to travel you are just going to have accept this and just take it off the bed if it bothers you.

I only know what my friends tell me BUT if anyone doesn't believe it take it off or Lysol Spray the heck out of it

Ew! And now I'm a germie freak like my mother! :scared1: I understand the bedspread, but the pink blankets? I mean come on! Last trip I brought my own pillow and my family thought i was being a freak. I can't sleep with strange ones. They are going to love when I show up with a giant comforter that I have had to stuff in a duffle bag and vacuum all the air out of...lol.

I also use them, walk round the room bare foot as well. When thinking of the over use of antibiotics don't forget the extreme over use of them in the food industry.

:scared1:

All you germophobes need to expose yourself more. Before you flame me, let me explain. You have a kid, take him to daycare for the first time and he gets sick. . .seems he is sick every week. Eventually your child stops being sick. This is because his own body develops antibodies to the germs he picks up in Daycare. We have sterilized ourselves so much that we can't function. We keep getting sick because our immune system can't handle the new germs.

I agree with you - we've been to Disney too many times to count and we have never removed the comforter and "knock wood" have never gotten sick. We're headed back again the first week of May and won't be removing the comforter!

Thank you to everyone who posted the info on Bed Bugs. I did not know how to look for them or what to look for. We have stayed numerous times at hotels and thus far have been lucky. I would like to keep that going.

You said it sister! My thoughts exactly :thumbsup2

We check in, I check the beds for anything nasty, do my lysol thing and then DS proceeds to jump from bed to bed instantly removing any non-secured bedding to the floor while I get things arranged for our stay. I then fold them up, put them on the top rack of the closet and call Mousekeeping for blankets. Did not PLAN for this to be our MO....DS just sort of made a tradition out of it :rotfl:so, no stuff from us left on the bedspreads, can't speak for the blankets, I HOPE they launder them, but can't prove it one way or another

I usually sleep under the top sheet and the soft blanket (it might not get washed either, but at least it seems cleaner).

During one stay, I kept trying to leave the comforter in the closet and the mousekeeper kept pulling it out and putting it on our bed. I tried to tell her what I wanted (which was to take the comforter away), but she did not seem to understand what I was saying. There was a language barrier. Oh, well....

Déje el edredón en el armario, por favor.

Gracias! :)

We never remove the bedspread or use wipes. We also walk barefoot. When our dds were young they crawled around rooms and sat on the bedspreads. We are all alive and healthy.

I have gotten sick while at Disney. Now my bet is I picked something up on the plane or in the parks. It didn't wreck our trip and doesn't bother me that it happened.

I couldn't enjoy my vacation if I had to worry about not touching things in the hotel room.
