When you arrive/take ur bedspread off, what...

I don't believe it's people taking precautions that causes people to get sicker now from the viruses and germs around us. I think we are paying for the abuse of doctors over-prescribing antibiotics and causing resistant organisms to form.

There's no harm in taking precautions to protect yourself. I plan on disinfecting the room as best I can when we arrive. I am also a nurse and there are some nasty bugs around that can make you ill! And ruin a wonderful trip- has happened to me several times. There's no harm in sleeping on a clean sheet- or requesting a new one to make sure you have a freshly laundered one. It is one of the basic principles of nursing started by Florence Nightingale herself. Always keep fresh air in the room - to air germs out! And a clean- not sterile- but clean environment is always healthier :thumbsup2

I don't think taking the bedspread off has to do with being a germophobe. They don't wash them between guests! People sleep on top of them possibly without clothing. Adults have relations on them and they don't get washed. Babies nasty diapers are changed on beds. I don't want to be sitting on any of that. I am not a germophobe. Kids get sick, adults get sick, it happens. I don't want to sleep under your body fluids. Ever.

THANK YOU...very well said...

I will be disinfecting our room to when we arrive Friday..I have clorox bathroom cleaner I will wipe down the bathroom in, and clorox wipes that I will wipe down remote/door knobs with...

This is another reason to love the new duvets on most of the deluxe resort beds. They are changed between guests just as the sheets are. :) Plus they are prettier and more comfy too. ;)

To tell you the truth, I never much thought about the bedspreads being dirty, although I always folded them down on the bed/beds and did not cover with them while staying in any hotel. Now after reading this tread I guess I will be looking at the bedspread and bedding in general a little closer from now on :confused3

Well said. I totally agree. The spread and blanket should be washed between guests, just like the sheets. I call and ask for fresh blankets and spreads when we get to the room.

I don't worry about the bed sheets as much as bed bugs! I fold down the comforter a lot of the times and only sleep between the sheets. I have never asked for fresh ones... never thought of that actually. But how do you know that they're not just bringing you something from another room? lol

Our family has actually been through the horror of bed bugs and we know exactly what they look like, where to find them, and how to protect ourselves from them. But even with all of that...we still worry. So I can handle a little bit of germs from sheets BUT I can NOT handle bringing one of those little creatures home with me AGAIN!!! LOL Our lives were hell!!

Your post made me realize I have no clue what bed bugs look like so I had to go check, if anyone else is curious heres the link

I do check for bed bugs. There's information on line, you need to take a small flashlight. I also pack most of my clothes in those giant sized baggies - the ones that could hold several outfits each.

The place to be careful is public bathrooms... I see people all the time either not wash their hands or rinse with no soap, or just poorly wash. I wash my hands thoroughly and don't touch anything without using a paper towel to turn off the faucet, open the door, etc...

There were some posts a while back asking if the comforters are washed every time. I'd hope so, given who knows who did what on top of them! I've met some filthy, disgusting people in my time so I think it's a reasonable concern, not being a germaphobe.

People go walking in public restrooms where people peed on the floor or through the grass and step in duck poop, then put their shoes up on the bed. If you come into my house, shoes off first....

um, I take the bedspreads off and put them in the closet. Its not the germs per se but I do worry about germs. It is the romantic or not so romantic encounters, a stranger's dirty butt print or residue of whatever else your imagination can conjure up.

Where on earth do you think that bedspread has been and what do you think it has been doing before you got that room? So I wouldn't be so quick to say anyone is a "germaphobe" in a pejorative sense.

I understand what nurse darcy said, but I think it disregards reality. We aren't talking about normal germs. The coverlets aren't washed like regular linens and blankets (they're decorative). Therefore, you can expect there are some remnants of food, drink, urine, feces, vomit, semen, and any other unnamed thing on them. That's just reality - and I don't intend on wrapping myself in it - and certainly not smothering my face in it at night. But hey, to each their own - if that's Nurse Darcy's thing, more power to her - it's a free country. Some people like to jump out of planes - some like stiff hotel blanket toppers. I pass on both :rotfl:

Anywho... To the OP. We drive, so bringing extra blankets is never an issue for us. However, if you're flying - you can ship a package to the hotel with your name as the attention and ressie # on it with date of arrival, and the hotel will hold your blankets for you. That is assuming you don't have room in your luggage or carry-on. :thumbsup2

Tell tale sign of bed bugs. Bed Bug Excrement on the Mattress.

Now isn't that something? I was thinking about when we were at the POP and I said to my son, I hope they have a big laundry machine because I couldn't imagine how they could launder those things. Now I know - they don't...hmmm... puts a new slant on it for me.

Now, I am no germophobe by any stretch of the imagination and I am not a hand sanitizing fool but that kinda skeeves me out. All the talk of people getting "disney souvies" and all after they visit - lol, I am going to have to take that into consideration when we go down next.

I would expect all bedding be switched out after each guest booking - I am surprised to hear that's not the case - but then again I never even thought of it.

Wow, this is quite the interesting thread. I'm going to take the middle ground here. Nurse Darcy is really correct about needing to accept some "regular" exposure to germs to build the immune system. As a teacher (23 years and counting), I used to get sick several times a year. Now, hardly ever. I've met a whole lot of germs...

The bedding at hotels, most of them anyway, doesn't overly concern me. We turn down the bedspreads or comforters so they only cover the lower portion of the bed. If it's heavy, it can be removed entirely. Florida in June doesn't require much more than the sheet, anyway. There were blankets on our beds at CSR, which we used, and we were comfortable.

We have never worried about bed bugs and I guess we've just been lucky. After reading these boards last year, we decided it made good sense to check the mattresses in hotel rooms, no matter the quality of the hotel. Obviously, if we found evidence of bugs or if the bedding looked unclean, we would speak with the hotel staff and ask for a different room and/or clean bedding. It wasn't necessary at CSR last year - everything was spotless - and I don't imagine it happens very often at WDW, or the place would have a much different reputation.

I'm sure hotel rooms harbor lots of germs, even when they've been carefully cleaned. Cleaning wipes are a good idea to deal with some of that issue, but even then, you won't be in a sterile environment. It's just best not to worry about it too much, and be realistic; you are in contact with lots of nasty stuff in your everyday life at work, at the grocery store, at movie theaters, at restaurants, at sporting events, etc. I think it's just more unsettling to people because you're sleeping where other people have slept, but the reality is that it isn't much different than a regular day in terms of exposure to germs. If you want to travel, it's just a necessary part of the experience.

We sleep in the beds as they are. Occasionally, I ask for an extra soft blanket because I set the ac very low.

All you germophobes need to expose yourself more. Before you flame me, let me explain. You have a kid, take him to daycare for the first time and he gets sick. . .seems he is sick every week. Eventually your child stops being sick. This is because his own body develops antibodies to the germs he picks up in Daycare. We have sterilized ourselves so much that we can't function. We keep getting sick because our immune system can't handle the new germs.

A bit blunt, but I agree. DH and I don't sterilize or disinfect the room when we get there. You do hear horror stories about rooms that aren't cleaned, but those are in the minority.

Do you know this for a fact, as in read it somewhere and can back it up? I work at a hotel. We completely strip the bed between guests. Pillow cases, fitted sheets, even the big bulky comforter gets cleaned before the next guest arrives. This is sometimes why a room will not be ready for check in (3 or 4 depending on the hotel). If there is a high turnover rate it takes a long time to completely strip the room and replace all the bedding.

Nurse Darcy is correct, you need to expose yourself to all kinds of bugs and build up your immune system. When my son first started nursery he would catch a cold, recover, catch a cold, recover, etc, etc. Now we are nine months into that cycle and it is a very rare occasion where he sniffles and sneezes.

Track down the programme 'Bite Me' and watch the episode where the presenter is in India and goes for a swim in the Ganges. A bit of an extreme example maybe but it illustrates the point well.

If you don't want the bedspread that is there when you arrive, can't you call housekeeping and ask for a new one?

Since I haven't seen a direct answer to this - YES - You can call and request a 'cleaned' one and they will bring it to your room typically wrapped in plastic after laundering.

... I think we are paying for the abuse of doctors over-prescribing antibiotics and causing resistant organisms to form.

There's no harm in taking precautions to protect yourself. I plan on disinfecting the room as best I can when we arrive.

Unfortunately.. yes there is a harm in that in the long run. You see.. all the use of these anti-bacterial this and anti-microbial that.. will eventually.. create 'superbugs' that are resistant to those items which currently do a great job of killing them.

We've seen this in hospitals to a degree with infections that are extremely resistant to both anti-biotics AND the typical cleaners used to kill them.

TV does a great job of grossing us out with multi colored images of germs on phones, soap pumps and whatever else.. but good grief. WHY do I care if the soap pump has germs on it?? I'm about to wash my hands within seconds of touching it. And the Johnson & Johnson's and Proctor & Gamble's of the world do a great job of creating a market for sprays, wipes, soaps and even furniture waxes (yes furniture waxes) that kill 99% of live bacteria in lab tests.

Unfortunately, few of us use the techniques they used in the lab to clean our home/hotel room/child's toys etc.

I find the whole thing a touch ridiculous.

Anyway.. maybe not tomorrow.. but the continued and widespread use of these things WILL create "super" bacteria that aren't going to die easily. I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but I do realize that this is how these things work.

That's the harm.

... quoting bit about washing the bedspreads...

Long story short.. they are washed every 'few' guests is my guess. That means not typically between EVERY stay.

If you have concerns about the bedspread, call housekeeping and they will bring you a clean one.

Wow - I travel all the time, and have never worried about the bedspread. I happily use them without a care.

I mean really- so maybe newlyweds had sex on the blanket two days ago. Who cares?

I admit my husband sometimes throws himself on the bed after a shower - naked. He is still alive.

Germaphobes creep me out way more than the blankets.

Totally correct!!!

I take off the bedspread and untuck the sheets, and make a huge mess of the bed. Just because i get too hot, and I like to have one foot hang over the bottom of the bed and be not under the covers :) But thats just me. I think I have driven neat-freak roomies a lil batty with it in the past :)
