So you believe retail workers would rather be on the job right now making like $400/week while being at risk of this virus everyday vs being at home furloughed making approx $900/week through July and then returning back to work when it's more safe? What am I missing that I don't understand?
They might not have a job to go back to so I hope they bank the extra.

I just drove my kid 45 minutes away just for a change of scenery - literally - because the cops were making sure no one unadvisedly tried to get out of their cars and breathed the fresh air on foot even with masks on. :/
That town will be boarded up forever if this keeps up.
We arent even allowed to go for a drive. Supermarket, drs, pharmacies. That's it.

Since most of those let go worked for small businesses, you are right. That is why we need these small business loans (which convert to grants if used properly) - so these folks can go back to work when the fog lifts. But some of those businesses will not recover, just as some people will not recover from this disease. We are going to have more casualties of this disease on both sides before we are done. But we can get through this.

Where is this. No drive? Holy moly
I’ve been driving around more now just to kill time. Walmart also. Never spent so much time in one. Lol
I’d have to use the excuse I’m headed to a pharmacy or my sick relatives house.

Are you allowed to go for a walk outside? I run almost every day and I live in NJ, one of the most restrictive states.

Please let’s argue in a civil non-condescending manner. Everyone has reasonable and differing points of view. There’s no need to make it a personal attack on one’s character especially when most of us have never met, and we’d be much more civil in person. I guarandamntee it.

This wouldn’t happen at my local Walmart. They’ve actually closed off most of the store, although you can order almost anything for curbside pick up. The grocery section is open but they are limiting entrances, and have even created essentially a one-way walking path. No wandering around Walmart at the current time

Oh we have those one way arrows. I spend a lot of time in the oil and car care section.
There is a place near here called Vance Outdoors. Gun shop mostly. But massive in size. You could spend hours in there.
Jungle Jim’s is a Cincinnati local market. Although it’s massive. You could spend literally a day there. It’s has it all. Including liquor and cigars. Stuff from all over the world. Cool place. Best thing is they both are essential. So...

I would hope as a first responder you would understand the need for this. PD/FD/EMS don't need to be wasting their time and limited resources with having to save someone who has an accident while out joyriding.

Same here. And the non-essential sections of Walmart and other stores with groceries are roped off. If you want something like new clothes or TVs, you have to do online ordering.
Cant even do the online shopping! Again only essential items can be ordered online, everything else must be closed. And those selling essential items can sell only essential items you cant add other things to the order.

That’s insane Where is this.
What about work. Gas. Drive to a walking trail. Etc.

Gas stations are mostly attached to grocery stores here so they are open.
We can only walk in our own neighborhood. Hiking trails are closed, no boating, fishing, surfing etc.
Basically if you could get into trouble and require emergency assistance you arent meant to be doing it.

Saying this over and over doesn't will it into existence.

This!!!

That's one thing that I find so odd in so many threads on here!! Some posters continuously post as FACT how all of these different things will open/return to normal at certain times.

Its almost like if they say it enough or can convince as many people as possible that these things will happen, then it magically will!!!

I don't think I have ever seen this phenomenon before on the Dis pre-corona virus.

Everyone and I mean everyone wants this to all go away, have everything open up, and return to our lives. But, truly, no one knows when this will happen and stating as fact when things will open, when people will "revolt", when people will deny their state orders and open their business anyway, when Disney will open, when MLB will begin, its all just a guess!!!

I think there are a few posters here, that feel like their lives are so out of control, that they can somehow gain control back by attempting to convince everyone on the Dis that things will be re-opened soon!!

NZ. No non essential travel (so you can drive to the places I listed and those only). The idea is they fobt want car accidents which require emergency services to burst their bubbles, or hospital beds wasted.

You can walk within your own neighborhood only. With a couple of kms of your house only.

I see. New Zealand. Well hope that passes fast. Best of luck with it all. I’ve met a few cast members from. NZ. One was at Haunted Mansion.

TLDR. First, I must preface with caveats. I have been pretty clear all along, that my reticence to support long term shut downs is about way more than economic factors. However, as this question deals directly with dollar amounts, my response includes economic and personal factors that have nothing to do with my feelings on lockdowns. I will not appreciate my thoughts being misconstrued by anyone as picking money over lives.

No store wants to be closed until July. There will be few or no jobs to which retail workers can return if retail stays on hold indefinitely. The “toilet paper shortage” is just the beginning of durable goods that will be on limited supply as retail, wholesale and manufacturing continue at reduced or nonexistent capacity. A lot of current retail inventory will be worth pennies on the dollar when stores reopen, and replacing that inventory with the appropriate new inventory may be scarce and probably significantly more expensive. Similar inventory issues are true for wholesale and manufacturing. There is a reason late November and December severe weather events make the news with regard to retail sales and their economic ramifications.

To assume all retail workers make minimum wage shows privilege and bias, and I would guess those same workers are treated as “less than.” Some people would rather work for $400 than stay home for $900, and often it is because they are members of socioeconimic groups who are considered and treated as “less than.“

I am an intelligent, well-educated person of privilege who chose to work retail. I worked with hundreds of people in 3 states who cannot say the same. Retail provides a decent living for many hard working people who do not have other options. The longer retail stays closed, the fewer options people in retail have to support their families.
