This!!!

That's one thing that I find so odd in so many threads on here!! Some posters continuously post as FACT how all of these different things will open/return to normal at certain times.

Its almost like if they say it enough or can convince as many people as possible that these things will happen, then it magically will!!!

I don't think I have ever seen this phenomenon before on the Dis pre-corona virus.

Everyone and I mean everyone wants this to all go away, have everything open up, and return to our lives. But, truly, no one knows when this will happen and stating as fact when things will open, when people will "revolt", when people will deny their state orders and open their business anyway, when Disney will open, when MLB will begin, its all just a guess!!!

I think there are a few posters here, that feel like their lives are so out of control, that they can somehow gain control back by attempting to convince everyone on the Dis that things will be re-opened soon!!
It's strange behavior to me as well. I'm guessing it's a coping mechanism to get through a situation that no one living has really had to deal with before. Like you said, it probably allows them to feel in control of the situation by convincing themselves what they want to happen is a certainty to happen.

I see. New Zealand. Well hope that passes fast. Best of luck with it all. I’ve met a few cast members from. NZ. One was at Haunted Mansion.
Meant to be 4 weeks. It is looking good. But bets seem to be going to alert level 3 which will still mean no schools, businesses closed etc for who knows?

All retail here that is still opened are hiring, with bonuses.
That is true here as well. I do not expect many of these positions to be permanent once essential shopping normalizes. It could be a while. The second caveat is the new positions are a small portion of those lost by nonessential retail.

TLDR. First, I must preface with caveats. I have been pretty clear all along, that my reticence to support long term shut downs is about way more than economic factors. However, as this question deals directly with dollar amounts, my response includes economic and personal factors that have nothing to do with my feelings on lockdowns. I will not appreciate my thoughts being misconstrued by anyone as picking money over lives.

No store wants to be closed until July. There will be few or no jobs to which retail workers can return if retail stays on hold indefinitely. The “toilet paper shortage” is just the beginning of durable goods that will be on limited supply as retail, wholesale and manufacturing continue at reduced or nonexistent capacity. A lot of current retail inventory will be worth pennies on the dollar when stores reopen, and replacing that inventory with the appropriate new inventory may be scarce and probably significantly more expensive. Similar inventory issues are true for wholesale and manufacturing. There is a reason late November and December severe weather events make the news with regard to retail sales and their economic ramifications.

To assume all retail workers make minimum wage shows privilege and bias, and I would guess those same workers are treated as “less than.” Some people would rather work for $400 than stay home for $900, and often it is because they are members of socioeconimic groups who are considered and treated as “less than.“

I am an intelligent, well-educated person of privilege who chose to work retail. I worked with hundreds of people in 3 states who cannot say the same. Retail provides a decent living for many hard working people who do not have other options. The longer retail stays closed, the fewer options people in retail have to support their families.
In no way am I looking down on retail workers and I don't assume they all make minimum wage, but most start out at or close to it. They are not paid enough to be put at risk by this virus and I still would assume that most would rather be at home right now making more than they would while working. I agree that some would rather work for less than stay home for more in a regular time, but not during a pandemic. They would face many of the same challenges you mentioned if they were open now because who wants to go shopping for clothes right now?

I voted July 15th with a second wave coming.

Our state (CA) has the shelter-in-place with no end date. Our county has no gatherings until April 30th, but specific types of businesses are ordered closed until June 19th, so I am expecting the "no gatherings" order to be extended. We have an order that is requiring everyone to wear face coverings when going out in public.

Local Facebook groups are complaining that the County's projections don't seem so bad and are complaining about why we still have to social distance....yeah, I think that's going to make our County's numbers go up. I believe we are projected to hit peak within the next week or two. By May, we will run out of hospital beds (including ICU beds) and ventilators. So far, we have enough PPE for the hospitals, but not for nursing homes.

Somebody watched Tucker last night....
You will never catch me watching Fox News. But My wife is a nurse at on a Critical ICU unit at a big hospital. She has been cancelled from 4 shifts over the last two weeks due to low census numbers at her hospital. They do have about 30 or so COVID patients but the stopping of all elective surgeries and other things has made a huge capacity. Hopefully it stays this way but according to the UW model we are still 11 days form our peak. SO yes there are hospitals currently that are not being overrun

I'm leaning towards end of this month to early May. I can't see us being closed for all of May. But I do expect a second wave.

Funny how Facebook works. Seems like kids say what 20 and under. Aren’t using it much. They do use snapchat and tic tok like there is no tomorrow. Instagram as well. Those are the platforms where the local pickup basketball and baseball games get started. Our daughter invited three of her friends to come over for the day. I didn’t even know. Phone calls are a thing of the past. Just do it via snapchat amd before you know it. There is a freaking slumber party.
I work tomorrow. So that’s my happy place along with Disney. Lol

These things have been going on for years. It didn't just start with social distancing and it isn't going to end if we quit social distancing. Our medical system is in need of real reform. Our social safety net has been dismantled. I've seen very few speak up about these things over the years and seen these things greeted many a time with thunderous applause. The fact remains that we have the means to take care of anyone that needs medicine or food. It appears to me that what we lack, as a nation isn't the means, but the will. That is not the fault of social distancing nor is ending it right now going to change that.
Absolutely.

And without measures they would have suffered more too both financially and health-wise.
Either way they would be worse off than usual.

Removing the measures does not take them out of excess peril. If the virus ran rampant, businesses would still be shutting down, healthcare would have been a massive contagion zone and multiple times inadequate.

Check out Sky News on PlutoTV. It's nice to hear the British reaction to what the US is doing. It gives me a different perspective.

Sky news is great especially for Premiere league info. I24 news is also prett good.

Yup, all non-essential appointments and elective matters (the ones where the hospitals actually make money in) are being cancelled to prepare for the worst and save the PPE.

The bolded is true of pretty much everyone. I appreciate your time to read and respond. I do hope that retailers are offered opportunities to change and meet demand in ways that allow employees to work while still keeping them safe when it is responsible to do so.

Good coverage of Premiere League. I just finished watching season two of Sutherland Till I Die on Netflix.

I'm more of a La Liga fan and watch BEINSPORTS. I canceled my SlingTV for now since there is no football on.

Here at least, the jobs that are hiring are making it clear that it is temporary. I've heard from people who work at the local grocery store that the are hiring for 90 days or until things reopen. So it's not really a solution.

I'm hoping unions get some traction, so that we can get some real inflation. Folks really should be paid more. It's one of my pet peeves having grown up in a working class neighborhood. I also hope we can get some more PPE into the pipeline for the second wave hits.

I love that show. Watched it also. I’m a Man Utd fan. But Sunderland is a team to root for to get back up.
