When were you last victim of a mommy driveby

Are y'all sure you are ready for this???

Seriously, I couldn't make this up if I wanted to.

Here goes :

My son was turning 13 last December and wanted an ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins. We decided to go order one - a large one for his party - and at the same time purchased him a banana split.

Paid for both items and went home on our merry way.

Next day, I get a phone call AT HOME from one of the workers. She stated that she noticed my son's mannerisms and wanted to know what was wrong with him. She mentioned that this phone call had nothing to do with the cake or order, it was a personal phone call.

I was shellshocked. Dumbfounded. Awed.

I proceeded to tell her that my son has Aspergers and ADHD. She wanted to recommend a doctor that helped a friend of hers whose daughter had Celiac. I told her (why I told her anything is beyond me - I should have told her it was none of her business) that my son had been diagnosed by several physicians and that his illness has nothing to do with Celiac. She proceeded to tell me that she was concerned because we bought such a sugar loaded fattening LARGE cake and purchased a sugar loaded fattening treat for our son. Yes, she said LARGE and SUGAR LOADED cake. And that she really wanted to recommend some new physicians and naturopathic doctors to me.

I finally got her off the phone.

DH came home and I told him what happened. His first words were "Are you kidding me?"

Unfortunately, I was not.

DH went to Baskin Robbins and talked to the manager and let him know the entire phone conversation I had with his employee. He looked like he had been run over by a truck. It was truly amazing how UNPROFESSIONAL and NOSEY his employee was. DH said that she needs to be talked to and that our UNLISTED phone number should have never been taken home by an employee and that we wanted to cancel our order and that we will never be doing business with them again.

DH said that you could have knocked the manager over with a feather. His mouth was open the entire time. He refunded us our entire cake amount, PLUS the amount for the banana split.

This was my latest "mommy drive-by".

My son ended up getting a delicious cake from the Safeway bakery for his birthday. And to this day has no idea why he didn't get his cake from Baskin Robbins.

I've never had a mommy drive by. As far as sending a five yr old into a public restroom by herself, no, I wouldn't do it. If someone else chooses to do it, it's fine with me. Their child, their decision.

I don't think either decision is wrong. I tend to err on the side of caution and I am completely comfortable with that. If others are more relaxed, it makes no difference to me.

I think the drive by mother in the OP's post should have minded her own business. Unless a child is in actual danger, then strangers should stay out of it.

DP and I were at dinner at a crowded restaurant last night. DD, 6, had to go to the bathroom and we let her go on her own.

A mother came by our table and spouted off that she could not believe we would let a child as young as our DD go to the bathroom by herself. She went on to spout all these "what if's". DP and I looked at her and told her that we do not live our life on what if's and told her basically to go pound sand.

DD came back proud she had gone by herself and for remembering to wash AND dry her hands.

Hates mommy drivebys.

Frankly, I don't believe this ever happened. I might believe you over heard a comment, but not that anyone said anything. I think your pot stirring.

My last mommy driveby was when my daughter was almost a year old and a lady (who probably wasn't a mom, or else she would know better) in a grocery store commented that the Ergo she was riding in was dangerous because it didn't have any head support! :rotfl: I calmly explained that she was old enough to hold her own head up
I anticipate many mommy drivebys in my future, as I tend to lean toward free range parenting, but what can ya do?

the OP did not ask opinions of letting your child go to the bathroom on her own. she didn't say "do you think I was wrong?"
there are many opininons.. one of those "gray areas" of parenting. for every instance of a mommy drive-by, there will be people who think what the original mom did was wrong. the subject is: should you inject yourself into another family's business?
she was talking about "mommy drive-bys". nosy people who insist on butting their noses into other people's business.
poolside at Disney, I saw a family with a little girl, about 8.
she was sitting on the lounge chair...naked. I thought it was very strange. but it was obvious that it wasn't at all strange to this family. I know there are people at disney from other cultures. of course I didn't say a word.
sometimes I don't like the way other people do things. (sometimes people don't like the way I do things).
It is NOT your business.

I think it is funny that people assume this mommy drive-by never happened. More often than not I have been on the receiving end especially when people ask about DD's sperm donor. You can probably imagine the looks and comments living here in the bible belt.

Some people just have no filter whatsoever and will come up and say what is on their mind no matter how offensive they might be. Hence the comment from me basically telling this busybody to go pound sand.

You are right. I remember one time I had the police called me..what for you might ask??? b/c I wouldn't buy my child some used playing cared at a yard sale that they wanted a $1 for..I tried to explain to him that I could get 2 decks at the dollar store for $1 and they could both have a deck. ds threw a fit b/c he didn't understand (he was only in the 2nd grade) plus he has issues and has been diagnosed. anyway, I got home and a cop showed up and said the the people at the yard sale said I punched my son in the stomach????? :scared1:
I was like HUH??????? so anyway the cop talked my son and then told me that it just sounds as though they were mad that I didn't buy anything.

does that count as a mommy drive by??? Yes it was a mommy as she had her baby in a play pin in the sun in a diaper and was smoking right next to him...:headache:

Sorry, but in this case, I don't qualify the OP's example as a Mommy Drive By... Not at all..... It was probably a very real concern for the child's well being...

One can say that I am issuing a judgement... They would probably be right.

I would never have let my child go off unaccompanied at that age.
Just wouldn't happen.

I know and to think I didn't say anything to her about the dangers of second hand smoke?

That must have been surreal! Someone would make up such a wild story, involving the police, because you wouldn't buy something there! The officer should've gone back and given her the business!

Scratch that lady off the yard sale list! (I know you did.) So wild! And that she was smoking near the baby (that probably didn't have sunscreen on) makes it even more crazy.

I wonder if you had legal recourse. The person who called the police filed a false report against you...

and the lady that the lady call her OMG is all I can say..WOW she had some guts or just plain stupid!! I am mad for you

Strangers come up to you and ask who the father of your child is? How incredibly bizarre. Such weird things keep happening to you! You're right, some people have no filter and can be so offensive! Why do they keep flocking to you?!
