When to Fess Up about Santa Claus?

My seven yr. old nephew and five yr old niece announced to me this past weekend that "Santa's not real". It KILLED me! I hate it that their Mama gave up the Santa thing so quickly (my nephew was asking questions and being sceptical). They also informed me that the jingle bells they heard on the roof a couple of years ago was Uncle David.

I was a little onery to them though, I said it was a shame they didn't believe in Santa anymore since that meant he wouldn't be bringing them any presents, only mom and dad would be getting their gifts from now on. My nieces eyes got a little big and I know she was rethinking that one, lol.

Maybe because every child is different!

I never thought I'd have to sit down and have the talk with my kids and it was something I never really wanted to do. I didn't with my son -- he figured it out on his own and was fine with it. My DD wanted my confirmation and she asked me flat out, begging me to be honest and serious with her, so I was. She'd asked in the past, but she'd never been so sincere before. I wasn't about to sit there and prevaricate when she was so dead serious.

That, IMO, would have been completely wrong.

I can't figure out how to quote the person you were quoting, but I believe she was referring to people who sit down with their young kids out of the blue and just tell them there's no santa, so they can get the all the credit for the gifts.

Absolutely if children ask for the truth they should be told the truth. I will have no problem telling my DDs when they ask, just like my mom told me. But I'd never tell them just for the sake of them knowing. They will figure it out soon enough. In fact, we're starting to think DD1 knows and she's just playing along for our sake - which is both sad and sweet.
