When to buy passes

I booked our room about 6 months in advance. How far in advance should I purchase my park tickets?

We have been booked for out trip since Oct. and I am going to buy our passes about a week or two before we leave. If you have a Disney Store nearby, they have started a new service where you can buy certain park passes there and they activate the cards in the store. They look like room key cards you get at the resorts that can be run through the scanners at the parks. I think the passes available are the 5 and 6 day hoppers and the 5 and 6 day hopper plus passes. If you buy in advance you get a discount and if you have Disney Club card you can get an extra 5% off. I would be scared to buy passes way in advance in case they get lost.

If you do buy your passes in advance, take them to a copier and copy the front and back of each pass. I've read several posts where if the passes are lost, Disney may replace them for free if you have the ticket number/serial number (?).

If you belong to AAA, you can also purchase discounted tickets from them. But sometimes they may have to order them, which could take a few days for them to arrive. So you give yourself enough time.

We use to buy them at check in. You can get the DC discount and they are put on the same card as your room key and credit card so you only have to carry one card for all three.

We have AP's now and I hate having to carry them along with our room key/credit card. And they're paper to boot! Hey Disney, can't you do better than paper for AP's?! (shouldn't complain too much...they save us a lot of $$$!)

We've been booked for our upcoming May trip since last July. I'll buy our tickets a couple of weeks before we go.
