When people use words that aren't even words...

Also lookit. What the heck is lookit and why do adults say it?:furious:

Guilty!!!! :teeth: I will usually use that word. Don't know if it's just a NY thing or not :confused3

My high-school math teacher used to make fun of students who would use the phrase, "Yeah, but..."

He'd interrupt the student, saying, "Yeahbut? What's a yeahbut?" It still makes me laugh!

Oh, and he's the teacher who taught me to use "May I" instead of "Can I" when making requests.

Here's a few more:

(1) Using "impact" as a verb, as in, "The hurricane will impact local emergency workers' abilities to respond." It's "affect."

From dictionary.com
im·pact /n. ˈɪmpækt; v. ɪmˈpækt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[n. im-pakt; v. im-pakt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. the striking of one thing against another; forceful contact; collision: The impact of the colliding cars broke the windshield.
2. an impinging: the impact of light on the eye.
3. influence; effect: the impact of Einstein on modern physics.
4. an impacting; forcible impinging: the tremendous impact of the shot.
5. the force exerted by a new idea, concept, technology, or ideology: the impact of the industrial revolution.
–verb (used with object) 6. to drive or press closely or firmly into something; pack in.
7. to fill up; congest; throng: A vast crowd impacted St. Peter's Square.
8. to collide with; strike forcefully: a rocket designed to impact the planet Mars.
9. to have an impact or effect on; influence; alter: The decision may impact your whole career. The auto industry will be impacted by the new labor agreements.
–verb (used without object) 10. to have impact or make contact forcefully: The ball impacted against the bat with a loud noise.
11. to have an impact or effect: Increased demand will impact on sales.

So a hurricane can impact--something.

DD12's Language Arts teacher is pretty much forcing them to use complete sentences when they talk in class. I think it's great to cut down on all the sloppy talking we all do now.

Anytime... we have to help eachother out so we don't sound stupid in these parts. We have confusing roads!!! :thumbsup2

Down here in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico becomes the "Golf of Mexico", Bradenton becomes "Bradington", and Ellenton is "Ellington". Drives me nuts!

When we were looking for a house our realtor (not a real-i-tor!) would ask us, "Are all of you getting more orientated yet?" Uhm, no, we're not facing east, but we are learning our way around and getting oriented.

Okay, so this thread has me TOTALLY noticing more!!!

Here's one that I have to catch myself. Sometimes, I say "safety deposit box" instead of "safe deposit box"....I don't know why. I KNOW it is wrong, and yet, it just slips out all the time....I drive myself crazy!!!

Oh, and one more I heard today (actually on Dr. Phil)...flustrated instead of frustrated. The lady said it a few times....it drove me nuts!!

I've worked as a writer and an editor, so this stuff drives me nuts.

Food Network types who always say "Mars-ca-pone" cheese (for Mascarpone).

Using "myriad" as a noun.

Saying "of" instead of "have" as in "should of" instead of "should have." (Saying it is bad enough, but people write it, too).

Oh my! I think I just heard Sandra Lee say that!!

One of my favorite mispronouced names from the Detroit area is Schoenherr Rd. It should be pronouced SHAY-NER. When my brother first moved down to the Detroit area and we would go down to hang out with him, I would always say it wrong because how its pronouced isn't anything like how its spelled.

The other thing that annoys me is that it is MackiNAC Island, not MackiNAW Island. Just like its the MackiNAC Bridge, not MackiNAW. Very irritating.

This may be a little OT but isn't the expression "buck naked" not "butt naked"?

I once saw a Hallmark card with a joke about this and I think it's one of those phrases that has changed over time.

One of my bosses constanty says "Fantabulous"...

:headache:

I just heard that word on Jo Jo's Circus this morning while my DS4 was watching it. Maybe he has kids and heard it there :confused3

Oh great, now I have images of my DS4 when he was 2 running around upstairs naked saying "butt naked". I couldn't get him dressed w/o laughing so hard. :lmao:

It's definately not OT. Actually, I'm wondering myself. I thought it was buck naked, but now I'm not so sure :confused3

Interesting. I would think it would be pronounced SHOW-EN-HERR. I have a doctor who'se name is Schoenfeld and it's pronounced SHOW-EN-FELD.
