When or did schools go back in session in the south?

South West Louisiana- we had some start 8/14 and my kids started 8/16- with the local university starting 8/22

My Nieces and Nephews in New Orleans area (private school) start 8/23 I believe

As far as our other holidays- at least in SW Louisiana...
Labor Day- usually is a 4day holiday here with teacher inservice on Friday and holiday for all on Monday
Veterans Day- just usually the one day holiday there
Thanksgiving break is the full week of Thanksgiving
Christmas Break runs 12/16-1/4
MLK Day- another 4 day for kids- with inservice on Friday and the Monday holiday
Mardi Gras- varries across the southern portion of the state- but usually get at least the Monday and Tuesday off- to the full week off (more private schools close for the full week because so many families choose to vacation that week)
Easter break- depending on the area will be the week before Easter and the day after or Good Friday and the week after
Schools close usually by Memmorial Day

I hope all of your schools have air conditioning! We don't start here until after labour day and even then it can get unbearably hot in classes.

Here, North Carolina Wake County, Kids started two days ago.

Nearly all the schools have started here in the Western NC (Asheville) area, from what I've heard on the radio.

In the Nashville, TN area, most schools had started by August 15.

For real???
I have never heard of a school without air conditioning. I guess because I have always lived in Florida. Nothing here is without air conditioning!

Most schools in northeastern South Carolina started last week.

they are all airconditioned now...

Growing up I attended an old private school - my mom and grandmother had attended the same one. We had no AC- although temps were slightly cooler they weren't much cooler than now lol. It used to be if you were good or got a good grade the nuns would let you sit in front of portable fans. But let me tell you- at some times of the year it was down right miserable on the 3rd floor of the school.

Most of the newer schools don't even have windows that open- but definitely have AC...

I taught in a school w/o AC, (through 4 pregnancies too). We are in school from after labour day until very end of June and it gets hot/humid even then, but July/August are much worse here so I just wondered. All of our newer schools are built with AC, but there are still quite a few around here without it. I'm in Windsor, Ontario right across the river from Detroit.

The kids here in Tampa don't get a "fall break" and I think they started up earlier than most others, they only get a day off here and there until Thanksgiving when they get Wednesday - Friday off and then no more time until the winter break in December.

Marion County FL is the same way. We started Aug. 7th. Our 'plus' has been getting out in mid-May so that we can go to WDW or Vero Beach before the schools elsewhere get out. In addition, the first semester ended when winter break began, so that all the exams were done before the holidays, and the new year was the start of the second semester.

Since we all really enjoy our May vacations, we're really not too happy about the new law and the later start of school next year. Arrgghh.

No AC in the schools here, and it can get pretty hot during the months of May, June, and September when school is in session. It's ridiculous. A few years back we built a brand new, $50 million high school with no AC except in a few offices and classrooms used for summer school. Apparently it's a symbol of Yankee frugality or something. That and, "well, I didn't have AC and I survived." Yeah, and we used to ride around in horse-drawn carriages, too! Time to enter the 21st century! :rotfl:

WOW! I guess I should be glad we are in Florida. We run the AC all year round-all through winter! It is only cold about 5 days a year.
I dont think I wore a jacket more than like 2 days last year.
I went to the beach all through December.

PS-If we didnt have AC-we would NOT have survived. It was 104 here the other day.

I live in North Georgia and our county school system started on August 1.

We live in a southern suburb of Atlanta, and my kids started back Aug 3!! too early for my taste, but they get breaks about every 6 weeks, which is nice.

My kids are in Hillsborough County (Tampa), and as someone said, we went back 3 August. My Mom is in Lee County (Ft. Myers), and those kids went back the 7th (I think). Pinellas County (St. Pete/Clearwater) went back the 10th.
Our best friends live in Volusia County (Deltona) she started school 8/2. She's a school nurse there. :teacher:

My DD start's school next week 8/30. Last year of High School for her!

We live in Sub of Buffalo, NY.
School here always begins the Wednesday after Labor Day. This year it will be
September 6th.
AC no way !

Schools in central Virginia range from August 15 until August 28. My kids return to school on Monday, August 28.

Star Valley Wyoming starts a bit later than most but not late enough! Aug. 24, that is this Thursday. Wow, what a fast summer.

I remember as a child not starting until after labour day. What happen? :confused3
