Only Canon knows, anyone else is just guessing. A lot of guesses had the 40D announced at the PMA show in March, didn't happen. Other guesses have it set for September. Canon has usually gone about 18 months between updates.

My guess? It could be a long time, and the update may only be 10MP and dust reduction (which doesn't seem to work all that well), buy a 30D. :)

Those who know rarely say and those that say rarely know.

If you buy a 30D now, Canon will come out with a really cool upgraded 40D almost right away. If you wait, they'll take forever and there will be almost nothing different. Sorry, but that's the way life works.

MY "GUESS"

If you check Canons history of DSLR introductions, there seems to be about an 18 month cycle.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/com...non_eos10d,canon_eos20d,canon_eos30d&show=all

The 30D was introduced in Feb. 06, so if the pattern holds introduction should be in Early AUG 07 with the camera hitting the streets within a month.

I dont see canon cramming over 10mp onto a 1.6x sensor so there "could" be two options.

Option 1) Stay with 10mp or less mp.(my guess

Option 2) Convert to 1.3x sensor to allow upto 12mp.

But I can See Canon giving us more SPEED and larger buffer.

Option 2) Convert to 1.3x sensor to allow upto 12mp.

That would make EF-S lenses usable only by the Rebel series. I find that very unlikely. In fact, I was a bit surprised that they stayed with a 1.3x sensor for the 1DM3. It puts it in no-mans land between EF-S lenses and full frame lenses. I understand why they did it, but I expect them to eventually move the entire 1D series to FF.

As you said "those that say rarely know.", but it sure is fun to speculate. And that is why I put in 2 options.

IMO forcing xxD series owners to purchase ff L instead of EF-S lenses might not be unthinkable from a business aspect. Maybe less sales but more profit per sale.

Also from a business aspect MORE megapixels sell more cameras, not saying that is how it should be just saying how it has traditionally been since Digital imaging started. If they Cram too many MPs onto a 1.6x sensor it starts to degrade picture quality, if they dont increase MP count they start to lose market share.

but I expect them to eventually move the entire 1D series to FF.

I would expect this as well, but then that would leave the door open for another series to use the 1.3x sensor(IMO).

:worship: Thanks for all the info guys...I knew that the all-knowing Dis Photo board would have the answer...:worship:

the choce to stick with a 1.3x sensor in the 1dmk3 is based around the current speed of processors onboard the camera body. the increased the capture framerate from 8.5 to 10, and increased the total number of pixels. in order to manage all of that information they already had to improve the processing speed over the mk2. if they were to maintain the pixel density of the 1ds, they'd have to have a processor running at almost twice the speed (as well as faster memory, etc.). today that's pretty expensive but in 18months, it probably wont be. it also means Canon continues to offer 2 pro bodies - one for the sports crowd and one for the high end (they call full frame the new medium format :) ) studio market. these are two markets they have done very well in compared to Leaf, Hasselblad, and Mega-Vision.

as mentioned above, Canon typically announce at either the PMA show or Photokina. even Nikon expected Canon to announce the 40d at PMA and they hurried their upgraded version of the d40 (d40x) to market to help stem the excitement - even though the d40x is in a market segment below the 40d.

lately, the new Canon models have not had significant increases over their previous models (30d over 20d, and 1dmk2n over 1dmk2) and now it's a much easier choice to skip one generation. i'll definitely be upgrading one body to a 1dmk3 this year. i hope it's before DW & i go to China and Tibet, but likely availity is not looking promising...

;) photo bear sam I think you should buy the 30d now and i'll wait for your buy to take affect and buy the next model:rotfl::cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

The owner of the photo store I frequent says September, but he's also guessing.

But, he did say for sure it will be a FF sensor, 16Mpix, 11fps, have a video mode, come standard with a Speedlite and come with a fully licensed version of Photoshop CS3. The kit lens will be a EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.

:rolleyes1

OK:thumbsup2

It'll be soon, as I recently purchased a 30d. :headache:
so nice of you to fall on your sword for the rest of us;) :)
mind if i ask what you had before? i'm trying to convince myself i really can get my 10month old rebel xt sensor cleaned rather than upgrading the body....

I had a Canon A520 point and shoot. It's a good casual camera, but I was ready to take that "step".

, have a video mode,

this would be a disincentive to buy for me. I have only used my real video cammera a couple of times... I definately don't need to sacrifice quality in my camera for a funtion I'll never use.

I am thinking that I might go from the xt to a 40d when it comes out, depending on what is on it. As nice as the new MarkIII is, I can't justify it for what I do... maybe one day, but definately not now.

Not to start an argument, but I've heard the claim of "this is a disincentive" used before and I don't understand why.

Why do you assume that a video mode would degrade still mode?

I 99.9% of the time use a camera as a still camera, and I demand excellent image quality. Yet sometimes - eg traffic at a busy intersection in Taiwan - the reality is best conveyed by a movie. So why be so down on a camera having a video mode?

i have an original digital rebel and i really need to upgrade. i was planning on getting a 40d after canon announced it last march. :-(

canon let me down. so now i am thinking of getting a 30d. i thought i had read there would be a price drop this month but no evidence so far. it would be a lot easier to justify if the price was $999 (body only). :-)

i would get a 400d/xti but i am pretty disappointed with it. i don't like the loss of the status lcd and the noiser 10MP sensor. i'd rather have a clean 8MP sensor. i do like the improved focus points as this is a big complaint with my rebel. i've also read the sensor clean feature barely works so that is a don't care.
