When does your child start school?

When I was a kid school started the day after labor day, but now-a-days it's earlier, sometimes much earlier. My wife is a teacher and I have a 4 year old who started pre-k this year. their first day of school was August 20th.

Out of complete curiosity I'm wondering when people around the country start school. Is it about the same time, earlier or later?

Our dd started school also on Aug. 20th. Some local schools started the week before, some the same, and some the week after that. It is a pretty hot topic around here, trying to keep both parents and educators happy.
The reasoning behind starting in Sept. (as it used to be) was because a lot of the schools didn't have air-conditioning. Now that they usually do, they moved the start time up. Apparently the start time was also moved up so that high school seniors had their mid-terms before the Christmas/Holiday break.... years ago the "mid" part was in January and no one wanted to come back and take finals then. Personally I think the first week of Sept. is ideal, but we may never see that again.

I've been back for two full weeks already. We began August 13.

My DD is supposed to start on Tues(Aug.28), but right now 3/4ths of the town is underwater. Water is in the basement and cafeteria of one school in the district, so we probably won't start on time. Some of the schools in our county started this week Wed. but with all the flooding they all canceled classes. They hope to start Monday.

We started back Aug. 3rd. Much too early.

We started back on Aug. 8th, but we will be getting out May 17th so I think its fine. We start earlier because state testing is in late April and we want as many days of instruction before the test as possible. Sometimes we miss a lot for snow.

Public school starts here on Monday, 8/27, the charter schools started last week on Wednesday 8/22. My dd's go to a private school and they don't start until after labor day, 9/4.

My DS started August 20th. Public schools start Monday, the 27th.

We started August 14, much too early! It has been so hot! Our schools are air conditioned, but the inner city schools got off early Thursday and Friday due to heat. Probably many went home to an empty house so that is sad.

Our statewide testing is in September. Ever since the legislature moved it to fall, schools have been creeping their starting dates up. The test is over what should have been learned the previous year, but the schools wanted more time to reteach in my opinion.

We do get out before Memorial Day, but sometimes it is not even swimming weather yet. I'll get off my soapbox now!

We started August 7th and the teachers went back on August 1st. Would you believe that we were in a heat wave when school started heat index was between 107 and 112 for about 2 weeks. That was not fun.

We went back on Aug 6th, but our county uses a "Balance schedule" which really means that every 6-8 weeks, we get at least 1 whole week off. I LOVE it! Our Fall Break is Sept 16-22 which happily coincides with Disney Value season and Free dining!

Our school district always starts the day after Labor Day so my dd will start 1st grade on Sept 4th & my ds will start preschool on the 6th & my other dd will be bored with just me all day (she is 18 mo).

Our kids go back Sept 5th. The teachers go back the day after Labour Day and they have one day without the kids. Kids start on the Wednesday.

My ds started back (1st grade) this past Tuesday - August 21. His school is not air conditioned and it was in the high 90's this past week. Schools around us were closing or dismissing early -- not his though.
