Hi everyone!

Just wondering if anyone can tell me when school starts generally for children in the West Coast. We are planning to be at DL at the end of August and just wondering if school usually starts in August like in the South or later like on the East Coast. Just trying to anticipate crowd level at DL around August 22 week. Thanks!!:earsgirl:

Not sure about Cali, but in Oregon we start the day after Labor Day(first week of Sept.)

Not that this helps much.

I haven't seen the 04-05 calendar yet for our school district in the San Francisco Bay Area, but we usually start late August, say around the 24th. It does vary a bit from district to district.

Thanks for the quick responses.:D

CalGal: We are first visiting the SanFrancisco area. We will be staying by Fisherman's wharf for a few days. My DH, my son, and myself have never been to SF so we are very excited. Thanks again for answering about the school dates. :earsgirl:

Disgirl-
Funny you should ask this! We live in south Orange County (about 25 miles from DL) and they changed the school schedule this year. We used to always start after Labor Day in September, but now we start the third week of August. They go back in 2004 August 27, (a Wednesday), but register and whatnot the week before. We are in Capistrano Unified School District and I know other Districts around us have not changed and still start in Sept. So, I would think anytime after the 21st would be pretty good. Bear in mind that early Sept. tends to be very hot here, and I for one, do not want to be standing in line at DL or DCA! Have fun whatever you choose  :D  :D

Thanks everyone for the responses about the schools.

Lulubelle: Thanks so much for the info. That is so funny about the school change, this year for your district. I can not imagine going back to school before Labor Day, but I know many districts across the country do. Our schools usually start two days after, the day after for teachers only. As far as the heat, we do not like to take our son out of school if we can help it, so we always seem to take the last 2 weeks in August because DH has off then too. We have been to Orlando for the last two years at that time so we are used to the heat and humidity. DH keeps telling my CA does not have the humidity that Florida does, it is drier. That is what I am counting on. I agree with you about long lines in the heat, though:( Well thanks again for your response and wishes.:D

I live in the Bay Area and our schools start the week before Labor Day. Not all the schools in the cities surrounding us start the same date, some start after Labor Day.

You will almost certainly find So Cal temps much easier to bear than NY! It can get very hot in early Sept, but humidity is generally low, and virtually always it cools off at night, unlike the East Coast. There are exceptions, but I've lived here all my life and it is like that way more often than not. I think most L.A. schools are still going back after Labor Day, though some are shifting; however, because so many other schools around the country start in early or mid-August, even by the end of August the out-of-town tourist numbers have dropped.

Thanks again everyone for your responses. Now, if the time would just fly by and reach August.:D :earsgirl:
