That is one of our absolute favorite times to travel to WDW! We love NYE, and have frequently started a trip Dec. 31 and ended around Jan. 10th. When the 1st is on a weekend, the first week will be very quiet in the parks. With the 1st on a Thursday, teh crowds will hang around through the weekend, but will drop VERY rapidly on Monday. We have never thought the marathon effected the park crowds much except on race day when spectators hang around after the race. The only problem with race days is the traffic should you need to drive anywhere!
