Oldest DS is graduating from high school this June. How far in advance do I send out his announcements?

Thanks,
Karen

I don't think announcement are sent until after the event. Just like baby announcements.

Are you sending them as an announcement, or as an invitation to attend the event? I guess the answer would dictate when to send them. If you expect people to attend, I would give at least a month to 6 weeks for out of towners, and a couple of weeks for in towners. If you are sending them as an announcement, I would wait until closer to the graduation - maybe one to two weeks before.

ETA - sometimes the announcements you order through the school will come with etiquitte instructions.

They are more as announcements since most are for out of state relatives. BUT....I would LOVE to have these relatives be here for his graduation.

Announcements are properly sent within 48 hours AFTER the event happens, whether it is a graduation, a wedding, or a birth.

Be careful sending them out in advance in the hope that recipients will attend the event; most graduations strictly limit the number of admission tickets that each graduate gets. The maximum usually is around 8-10, and depending on the venue, they may limit each graduate to no more than 2 guests. You really wouldn't want to have people plan to come in from out of town and have to tell them that they cannot actually attend the event.

I think about 1 week after the first parent-teacher conference during their Kindergarten year should be soon enough. ;)

Believe me, that day seems like it was just yesterday! :sad2:

I don't know what the etiquette is but last year I received about 10 announcements from local kids about 2 weeks prior to the graduation date. Some if these included invites to after grad parties/bbq's. Our graduation takes place at the local University stadium and there is plenty of seating so tickets are not required and anyone can attend. I mailed cards w/checks to all the kids whose parties we did not attend and I took cards and checks to the parties we did attend.

I also received several announcements from out of state, mainly old friends. We received these right about the time they graduated or shortly thereafter. We were not invited to attend and were not expecting to be. I mailed off cards and checks to all the out of state kids.

My son is a Jr. this year and I am expecting another flood of announcements and have already made it a budget line item since last year surprised me.

Must be a regional thing. If you know the family enough to know how old their kids are, you'd expect them to graduate, wouldn't you? Why would somebody have to announce it? (Note: I'm differentiating this from invitations to celebratory parties, etc.)

I can see announcing it if it were some kind of surprise or extra special accomplishment, but do people even announce COLLEGE graduations?
