When did you join the DIS?

My account says I joined in 1999 but I actually joined before that. There was a big server crash that year and I lost my post count and had to start over. Does anyone else remember that?

Yup. I joined the end of 1997 to plan my honeymoon, but my date doesn't reflect that.

1999 here. I was a victim in the big crash. But quickly rejoined in 2000. I have loved the Dis for many years.

I joined in 2008, but I had been lurking since 2007. I don't remember why I suddenly felt the urge to post. This was my second (err... third - my first was actually MiceChat, but I got temporarily banned from there for some reason I don't remember) online Disney community. My "home" is MouseBuzz, which is much smaller than DIS... in fact, we're becoming extinct as old members leave and new ones aren't finding us, so if you want a small, friendly community, come give us a try! We're really nice, and we get rid of trolls quickly (but enjoy them for their entertainment purposes - with a small little town, it's fun to get a little excitement).

I lurk and sometimes post on the Disney Weddings forum - that's really how I found this place... my obsession with Disney Weddings (still haven't had one, btw ). I tried out the family and the teen boards, but nothing clicked there. The teen board was really cliquey, and for the most part much younger than me... more like a child board. I prefer adult company.

I then stumbled upon the DISign board and started a thread... but I've kind of abandoned it a few times just because the work I started with is much lower quality than what I can produce now, so it's a litle annoying for me to continue to personalize my first designs because they're so amateur. Also, I'm an architecture major, so I work on a computer with graphics all day and designing has lost a little bit of its "fun" factor.

Then I found the photography board which I love because it really sparked not only an interest in photography, but encourages me to continue to improve my technique and knowledge. I used to shoot in auto (which is basically like shooting with a really nice point-and-shoot), but I now shoot in manual and save all of my images RAW so that I can adjust them in Lightroom. When my friends compliment my photos, it makes me happy, but I also think - you have no idea how amazing some of the photographers on DIS are!

And then I've always come and gone from the Community Board. Right now, I really enjoy it because I'm living in Genoa, Italy, so it has become my virtual substitution for conversation with English-speakers. It's updated so frequently that I can almost always find a topic that interests me. And it's great to see real people's perspectives of what is going on in the US right now. I do keep up with the New York Times, but I enjoy reading real people's debates. Whether or not I partake is another story...

I don't, but my friend does. That's why her username is now EllenakaSnowWhite - before the server crash, she was SnowWhite, but someone had already registered that name when she went to join again.

I joined in late 1998 - early 1999 but didn't post regularly until May 1999 when I was on bedrest with my (now) 13-year old DD. The join date and post counts were reset more than once due technical issues.

I joined in Jan 2011, one year after our first trip, a year before our 2nd trip. I was missing the WDW magic, and was hoping to start planning a 2nd trip.

I felt I was prepared for our first trip from research, but after hanging out on the DIS, I found that most of what I took as preparedness was actually value season and dumb luck.

As a result of the DIS, I had more tips for our 2nd trip, and made a decent vacation out of what could have been horrid (our marriage was hanging by a thread at that point - NOT happy times... much better now though, but still not perfect, but hey, who is?!).

the WISH board also really helped a TON when I started running. Now they are there to keep me on track to unleashing the skinny woman in me!

Came for the WDW tips, stayed for the interesting topics , with a little splash of WDW planning and tips still mixed in. You're never too old to stop learning!

I know when I joined but I can't remember why I joined.


I used to post a LOT on another Disney board. I was a big fish in a small pond there. New mean people came in and it just changed the dynamic and it became less fun. Somehow, I migrated over here and I like it because I am just one of many and none of you will recognize me in the parks and make my husband make small talk so he LOVES you all for that.

Seems like a loooooong time ago. I can't remember a time when I wasn't a member LOL! Unlike some others, I don't particularly pine for the "good old days", cause as Billy Joel once said "the Good ol' days weren't all that good and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems." Honestly things change and we all change with it. I'm impressed with what Pete and the others have built here over the years and I hope they are too. It really is quite amazing.

I joined at the end of 1998 when getting ready for our first and only family vacation to Walt Disney World in 1999. I've been here ever since.

It was a much smaller community back then, where we actually kind of got to know each other, and chatted on the weekends. Now there are so many people that the gather threads or cruise meets now have as many people as those of us that posted here back in the early 2000's.

Joined in July 2009 planning our 2nd trip to WDW in 2010. Was looking at another forum for our timeshare. Someone on there recommended this site and I've been hooked ever since. I'm here almost every day. Even when I'm at WDW or DL. I'm always learning something new and I like to offer what I've learned to hopefully help others.

The first time was around July 1998. Stumbled upon a little message board while researching a trip on the new Disney Magic. Much has changed, not all for the better.

Change is good for us, so they say.

I stumbled on the DIS while planning my 1998 trip.
At that time, there was ONE board, now we have over 50 to choose from!
Webmaster Pete was a frequest poster back then.

When researching for our first trip to Disney when my dd was 12 yrs old I came across a discussion board. They guy running it knew an awful lot about Disney. His name was Pete and the board was a former version of the DIS. My daughter is now 28 yrs old, lol!
That board required clicking on each response to view their comment so it would take forever to read a thread with a lot of responses. But I learned more about Disney than I ever dreamed and we had an absolutely awesome trip!
Things have changed a lot over the years, you never see a response by Pete anymore but he responded to virtually every post in the beginning. I've met a lot of awesome folks on this board over the years, some are still here and some gone but not forgotten

Well, since it began in '97, I began in '97, too, shortly after it began-maybe 6 months. 1 board, that became 2 with the debate board. And, yes, there was drama then, too, but because it was small, everyone 'knew' everyone (sometimes too well!). Lots of laughs and a great way to get to know the internet.

EATA: That doesn't seem right, though. We took the boys to WDW in 2002 and I could have sworn I was on the DIS then. Maybe I just read and didn't join. ??
