GRRRR....Just got a phone call from a marine recruiter for grandson who will be a senior this year. Said he is calling all of the seniors to see what there plans are.

ETA: No one ever called when our son was that age!

i know they did when i was graduating 30 years ago-and when my sons were more recently-and if his high school administers the ASVAB as part of the testing process in the senior year once the scores are in you may get more calls especially if he scores well. I think my sons periodically got calls until we moved and disconnnected that phone number-well after highschool. I generally let them handle it as we were not opposed to them talking to a recruiter if they chose to-and generally when they reeled of the-my-dad-is-in-and-has-been-to-iraq-twice-how-many-times-have-you-gone? speech it made their point much better than no thanks im not interested......

I got a call when I was a high school senior in 1998.

I just changed the title to ..When did recruiters start calling the homes of upcoming seniors? Then I read your response. When our son was a senior in 1990-91 we never got a call.
Looks like they have been doing this for some time now.

I got a call when I was a senior in 1996. I don't remember if it was the Army or the Marines, but I do remember he was VERY pushy and would not take no for an answer. I finally had to hang up on him!

Sorry OP, this is off-topic:

jsmith, I just wanted you to know that I was very touched by the quote/motto/creed?? in your signature line. I have never heard or read that before and it gave me chills (in an "I am soooo proud of and greatful to our soldiers" way) THANK YOU for your service. :goodvibes

Got a letter from our school this week - "___ ___ High School is required by both federal and state laws to release to military recruiters demographic information about students in 11th and 12th grades". There is a place for parents to opt out of this release on the bottom. The military is desperate for more recruits, as the wars are in the news I bet sign-ups are down.

OP ~ In my son's HS, we have to sign a form stating we do not want them contacted by the military.

Grandson wasn't home so he said he would try again at another time.

I've seen recruiters in the music section of walmart before  walking up to teens to talk to them.

My ex was an Army Recruiter. When we lived in Cincy every time we went out it was like he was always trying to recruit people because of the requirements the Army put on recruiters to recruit X amount of people every month. It was ridiculous. When I was a senior (10 years ago) the local military (which there's a lot of around here) would set up tables during lunch periods and would ask for your info if you were interested (of course, a lot of kids did this cause they were giving away free stuff if you filled out the info card ).

Thank you both for the info. Last thing I want is them calling my home all year. School hasn't even started here yet and they already have the info. :(

I got a call in 98 for me. He was nice enough, but since I had been diagnosed with epilepsy a year prior they didn't want me!

We signed the form and never got a single call at home. Weren't opposed to DS talking to recruiters if he wanted to, just wanted him to initiate any contact.

My then BF got a few calls in his senior year, 1993/4. Don't Ask/Don't tell had just happened, so I told him if he kept getting calls to just tell the recruiter that he think he might be gay, and would that be a problem? :rotfl:

I think going into the military is an excellent career choice for young people that have the personality (for lack of a better term) for it. That's one phone call that wouldn't anoy me, as long as they didn't keep calling after being told there wasn't any interest.

I got a call when I was in high school in 1977. A friend of mine ended up going to see the recruiter and ended up in the Air Force and traveled the world!

I got several different ones when I was in high school (graduated 1999) my mom told me to tell them I was pregnant. They stopped calling after that lol

A few of my friend's husbands are recruiters and it's actually been a little easier lately because of the economy. More people are choosing to stay in for another tour or join because of the lack of civilian jobs.

My kids got them in 2000 and 2002 ~ I didn't have a problem with it and since we're a military family, it wasn't any big deal. Both kids said no thanks, told them what their plans were and that was that. Once in awhile they would get something in the mail but no more calls :)

My brother graduated in 87 and I graduated in 90 and we both got phone calls.
