When a thread is locked...

Ok, here is my very weird Dis habit. When I’m done on here, I go back to the home page and scroll to the top, so I can leave it as I found it. It’s like some part of me thinks that if I exit wherever I leave off, that’s where you guys will find it. I have to put it back for the rest of you.
No matter how hard I try, I cannot stop.

These days you can predict locked status coming simply in the title. Funny in 14 years here I have never ignored anyone. This week put 3 on the list. One even from my hometown. Now I know who to ignore IRL, kind of nice:rotfl:

Edited to add: what was the butter/ bread title?? Was that one locked?

When a thread is at 4 or 5 pages before I've had a chance to read it, I pretty much feel like the boat has sailed. I almost never post on a thread when it's that far developed. And there are some threads you just know are going to to end up getting locked (like anything to do with guns or racism) that really feel like "not my circus..." and I never post or even follow along with those.

If I see a thread I’m interested in, I’ll read through the first full page, and then go back and read the entire thread, after I’ve read other threads, only if I have time to go back.

Agree. Anything over 5 pages has been asked and answered. And has probably gone off the rails.

Not necessarily. Sometimes it’s locked for no reason that we can see. Sow t

This is a private board, we belong and post at the whim of the Moderators and within the owners rules. This is not a Democracy, nor is any board.

Now as far as 5 pages, I've sat through way too many "How to Moderate" classes at work. You WANT lots of responses. That's the sign of a successful thread, not a sign of going off the rails.

I feel guilty as heck when I make a comment in a thread and it gets a lock down.

My weird habit is wondering what someone did, when I see their username crossed off and they were the starter of the thread. I always click on the thread and try to figure out how the person got banned.

There used to be a poster here whose Signature said something to the effect of:
"Up to Page 5? Time to Unsubscribe!" :rotfl:

Don't moderators know how people got banned?

I always wonder who reported whom and alerted the moderators to the thread.

Kind of like the tattler at school who tells the teacher and stops the fun.
I think mods (at least certain ones) either:
A) Know from the title the thread is bound to be contentious and pay attention to it
B) Notice an explosion in number of pages in a short time and pay attention to it
C) Get tipped off by sources outside of Dis (and that's all I have to say about that)

Right!?!? The one that was locked recently really went off track.

It depends on the topic. I never said that threads shouldn’t be locked. I know how things work

Not all locked threads are that interesting. Sometimes they lock them after a couple of posts because the question has been answered. I've found most threads will eventually go off track. Even the pleasant ones. I very rarely post in this forum. It doesn't take more then a few visits to see why threads get locked so often.

Most of the moderators in forums I've encountered will at least tell the OP why their thread is locked.
They'll also tell an individual user why they're banned/blocked.
Telling everyone else is just starting drama imo

I've also never felt the need to block anyone. I guess I just don't take it seriously enough to get "so angry" I can't read what someone else is posting. This board is something I do for fun when I'm bored. I like the back and forth debates as long as people are nice about it. I remember a thread about peoples pet peeves. It started out as fun and then people started getting so mad and offended at other people for their pet peeves. Why???

I used to come here strictly for information, but now that I've done so much traveling I'm usually the one answering other peoples questions.

I consider it a personal victory when a post I've reported gets deleted.:D

Is this something people do often? I think I've only reported one post.

Only time I've had an issue with a moderator and "points" was my very first post. Asked a genuine (if naive) question & a few people thought I was looking for a handout or something. Guy started attacking, mocking, and relentlessly making accusations regarding my character. Used a term for his behavior that I've since seen on other threads but at the time it was termed a "personal attack". Very quickly learned that this forum is very different than any others I've used. Several posts were deleted.

Edit: removed mention of word at suggestion of other users. Confused, but trying to play by the rules.

I've seen that more when the mods are just trying to get ahead of the game. Most often on the threads I've personally visited (though not necessarily commented on) the question got answered but something else got brought up or the intention behind the OP of the thread is brought into question and the mods are just trying to prevent a back and forth thing. More often than not it's the same several mods that are doing that IME.

I've also seen it where an old thread was brought to life and the thread then gets closed typically because the information is so out of date-the thread wouldn't have gotten closed if not for it being brought back to life.

You are right in that a thread is not always closed because something 'juicy' if you will is going on.
