Wheelchairs when you leave the park

Just a quick question about something that happened to us for the first time on our latest trip last week. Let me preface by saying I've used the WDW rental wheelchairs for the last 15 years or so. We would turn the chair in before we exited the gates, and I would walk with my cane to the bus.

But on this trip, we were told at each park that it was perfectly OK for me to stay in the chair until we reached our bus, and to leave the chair off to one side. A wonderful thing, especially at the end of a really long day.

Is this new, or has this policy been in place all along and I never knew about it?

I'm pretty sure this policy has been in place, the idea is that any guests who is in an unexpected need of a wheelchair has access to one quickly. At the end of the night the hosts from the wheelchair/stroller/ecv rental area collect any excess.

Mum has been able to ride to the bus stops and thru the POP queue in comfort and style for the last few years compliments of the disney wheelchairs! This is the first time we are renting from Apple so she has one to go to the parks with as the Pop stop is usually the farthest one out! but we still Pop!

If memory serves me correctly, is there not a deposit on the WC? How would one go about getting the deposit back?

not always.. I know at EPCOT the last few times I was stopped at the turnstiles and told to return the chair but was given one of those awful ones that have the giant flag attached. this got us to the monorail( or bus, depending on day) but DH had to wheel me on the back 2 wheels the entire time as the front one fell off.
