Whats your opinion?

Good, I have no use for casinos....just another way to rob people of their money...odds are never in your favor...Florida has enough attractions..casinos are not needed....I like the Disney cruise line just because there are no casinos aboard..

LOL! I bet Disney fights this in a HUGE way. I can't imagine them liking another option for vacation $$$ in the area.

Wouldn't you just LOVE to be a fly on the wall in some of their stragegy meetings to fight this!

I am indifferent..I don't go to the casinos locally or in NJ so it doesn't really bother me all that much.

Maybe it would force a Disney World trip to be more affordable as they compete for vacation dollars while reducing the # of large "rude" Brazil groups that I've read about on these boards (Brazil vacationers were mentioned in the news article). Sounds like a Win-Win proposition.

Perfectly understandable position for Disney to take and they are entitled to push their best interests. I'm a bit amused by the slant on this story - as if Disney shouldn't be protecting their own interests.

Lets also be aware that there already are casinos in FL. I don't think that adding more is really going to make an impact on overall tourism to the state. I really doubt that people are going to see FL as a gambling destination like Las Vegas or the gulf coast casinos.

And before somebody turns this thread into a morality play, if you don't like gambling then don't gamble but please don't try to stop everybody else.

The indigenous tribes of Florida already operate (or contract out the operation of) casinos in Tampa and Miami (that I'm aware of), so they've already lost that battle.

All they can do is lobby to keep the restrictions in place to avoid having a casino pop up in the Orlando area.

I'm sure their analysts have assessed the threat an Orlando-area casino presents to their bottom line, and they feel it's justified to spend a few dollars here and there now than to ignore the issue and wake up to another money-sucking black hole just down the street in the indeterminate future.

Ive often wondered if Disney made a fuss over Sea World, Universal, and now LegoLand coming in and being their competitor. Then on the other hand, I know Disney is geared to family but think of the money they could make if they got involved into casinos.

You know there is a funny story about US coming to Florida. Days after Universal announced plans to build a movie-themed theme park in Florida, Disney announced their own plans to build a movie-themed theme park (they had been working on plans for a movies pavilion at Epcot, a very large pavilion, and just expanded it to an entire park to compete with Universal's). Suddenly, a great race began to see who could finish their's faster. Disney, eventually, won with an opening in 1989. However, US opened in 1990, but many of their rides (such as JAWS) did not function properly the park was sort of a bust until they fixed the existing attractions and added several new ones in 1991. It was said that the park that opened first would get the most people and turns out to be true.

On the topic of the casinos, I heard about this on our local news (we live in south Florida) and it caught my attention. It does not surprise me that Disney has a problem with it because they should. If new casinos open up, it will force them to lower their hotel rates! Personally, I am not a fan of casinos. I have only been to Vegas once (for business) and plan on never returning. This is in no way an insult to those who live there, I just don't like all that stuff. Anyway, I guess having Casinos would not be a bad thing.

Clement, you are right they have several casinos in the Hollywood, FL area. However that is by Miami, and these proposed casinos would be in Central Florida (Orlando).

I am curious are Casinos in Florida owned by an Indian Nations as they are in NY.
If so just keep in mind in NY they pay no TAXES on there property. cigarettes, gas etc. and they keep buying more land and paying no tax dollars.
I do have an issue as my land taxes keep going up, up and up!!!!
Don't get me wrong I go there once or twice a year with $20.00 in my pocket usually for a concert or banquet...

I think they would lose money and hurt their brand significantly. :)

Since this isn't about Theme Parks or trip planning, I'm moving it to Rumors and News.

Oh? Then why are they making more than just "G" rated films? I remember when Disney only made "G" rated movies,,,not anymore. Not to add drinking in the parks. and WAY back when the park (Disneyland) first opened they wouldnt let long hair freaky people with tatoos in the parks.

I don't see the big deal with having casinos in Florida. I can see where Disney would fight it tooth and nail but for me its not a big deal.

If people want to gamble, they will do so and sure don't need a casino to make it happen. If people want to throw money away in a casino that is their business, just like its mine to leave after I have lost my set amount of money.

A true gambler will find a way to bet on anything with or without casinos.

I personally liked it when the only casinos were in Las Vegas and overseas. That made going to one a special experience (like a trip to Disney). Now that they are appearing everywhere they've kind of lost interest to me. We even have one about 20 miles from our home but we seldom if ever go there.

Now that they're basically appearing everywhere I don't see any reason to keep them out of any given state or area. If somebody wants to go to one they're just going to go wherever they are to spend the money and that community will benefit. Every place should look at getting their fair share of the income casinos generate.

Actually, if Florida approves them I would like to see a Disney themed one someplace on property!

I can see why Disney take issue with it and personally I'm not a gambler, but I've been to the casinos in Vegas and Detroit and I quite like them. We go, we have a nice dinner, we gamble $50 max and we go home. I think it would be a good thing for the Orlando area.

I don't think it should go anywhere near disneyworld. There's too much crime in Kissimmee already, we don't need more.
