I usually buy either the 16.9oz six packs or 2L depending on what is on sale. I like the smaller ones better but they're not on sale around me as often as the others are.
We usually buy the 16.9 oz for my husband's lunches at work. And I prefer the same size for home but will buy 2L or mini cans for at home if they are cheaper at the store.
I'm not a pop drinker myself but I really like the mini-cans for parties. Larger cans are often found all over the place, 1/2 full, at the end of the evening. The little guys are way less wasteful. I always get cola and ginger ale and it's a bonus if I can find something else too, for variety. I occasionally find orange or rootbeer, but those aren't as commonly available.
We also buy 12oz cans. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I like one in the morning. I'm also a big fan of flavored seltzers, so we usually buy cans by the case at Costco.
No - I mean it eventually goes flat even when I seal it in the bottle. I bought a few of the 1.25 liter bottles of Coke or Sprite for my dad since it's been warm recently. When I come by for a visit, he says it might have been opened four hours ago and the fizz is mostly definitely reduced.
I do remember getting this supposed Champagne stopper (with a locking cam action) that claimed to keep it fizzy for a day but it never really worked that well.

If it fizzed out that quick, there was something wrong with the product. If you close it up AS SOON AS POSSIBLE it won't do that. Although, leaving it open for that short a time shouldn't cause the fizz to go.
I pour 1/2 can (about 6 oz) of coke in a glass to drink, and put the opened can back in the fridge to finish later that day and there's still fizz in it.
I have a glass of coke sitting by me that I poured about 2 hours ago and it still has fizz.

Having carbonation isn't the issue, but it definitely loses some once opened. And I always seal a bottle tight. My understanding is that the best way to protect the fizz would be to shrink down the container size, although that's not practical. Like how wine in a box is usually in the form of a bladder that shrinks as it's poured. But if it's carbonated, a liner like that would just stay the same size with the carbonation ballooning the liner.

Also keeping an opened bottle (not a can) out of the fridge will keep it carbonated longer than in the fridge. The warmer temperature creates more carbonation and forces the cap to fit tighter than in the colder fridge. We used to leave opened and recapped 2L's in the fridge, dead the next day. Leaving on the counter, stays well for a few days.
