What's wrong with People Mover?

Last week we rode PM plenty of times without issue.

However, I did notice a few times that it was running with nobody aboard. My guess at the time was that there was an issue that needed to be addressed, but the operators wanted to make sure nobody was stranded on the ride, since they can only see a small number of cars at any time. Thats why the last car has a bright orange cone.

So run the ride empty, until they see the cone twice, and they know nobody is aboard, and its safe to stop to address whatever the issue is.

It's probably the ride getting stuck. It seems to be an ongoing problem. We saw people stuck on it when we were there last year. Amazing that they can't get it reliably fixed

Yep, just a couple of weeks ago the ride stopped completely and they couldn't get it restarted so everyone riding had to get out of the cars and walk off! We didn't have that issue last Saturday but we did have to wait on the ground for a few minutes before being allowed to go up the ramp

I saw the red cone in one of the last cars and I figured someone had vomited in it and they didn't want anyone to go in it.

In May 2017 they held people at the bottom until the top area was cleared of people. Then they let enough people go to fill the top area of people and stopped the bottom again.
They weren't letting anyone be stuck waiting on the escalator.

There was a long line but it moved fast.

It definitely wasn't just to keep people off the escalator. The escalator was cleared for a long period and the cars were going around empty for a while before they started letting anyone start going up the escalator again. We waited at least 10 minutes at the bottom and there was definitely no one at the top getting onto cars. It seemed like they were getting everyone off the ride and then letting people go on the ride again.

We were there in the middle of August, and rode the people mover several times, as it is one of our favorites . .. surprisingly, even a favorite of my DS13. Pretty much every time we rode it, it stopped multiple times during our ride. I know sometimes rides stop for wheel chair / handy capped loading unloading, but this was like 5 or 6 stops each time we rode. Also, once as we were going up the ramp, the line at the top was backed up, and the ramp was pushing me toward running over two little kids. Luckily, I was able to turn around, and walk the wrong way, and managed to get my family, and a few people behind them to do the same for long enough that someone stopped the belt, but it was a seriously tense 15 seconds or so, where I was honestly worried about whether I would hurt the two little kids at the top when we all got pushed into them.

I wonder if that might have some bearing on why they seem to be shutting the belt down a bit prematurely now, and clearing out the line at the top before restarting it.

Guessing threat of lightning. It's a ride that you venture far from the loading and unloading area and spend much of the ride outside so higher chance for weather to affect operation.
Even though the track is outside, its covered the entire way. Perhaps a high wind accompanied by rain would cause it to close? In other words, the daily afternoon thunderstorm?
Be careful what you wish for, too: at Disneyland it needed extensive repairs, so they would have had to modify it to fit new codes. They tore it down instead, and the remnants still hover useless over tomorrowland.
The DL version was very, very different from the WDW version.

We just returned from Disney and PM was shut down one afternoon. Must have been having tech difficulties since there was no storm threat that day. We noticed a lot of break downs this trip. Space mountain was shut down most of the morning the other day. TSMM was down for a half a day last week and when it opened back up, they only took FP people and the line stretched down to one mans dream. FEA was closed when we rope dropped it, but it opened within about 20 mins. There were random closures throughout the day for various rides. We were walked off Pirates too.

Sometimes it just seems that Disney HAS to make people wait in line for rides. I'm sure that's probably not the case, but it seems it!

when we were there last week, the CM held the line at the bottom of the escalator until it had cleared at the top and then she let more people up...
it was about a 10 minute wait..

Been here about a week, and while we didn't experience this with PM, I'll echo the sentiment that the ride closures have been numerous.

It seems that just about all of the top attractions across the board have been down at one point or another. It hasn't really affected us too much, other than the fact that it pushes crowds into areas where they wouldn't normally be, but I've certainly noticed it more this trip than in any previous trip.

We had the same issue when we were there 8/19-26. Then each time we rode it, it stopped multiple times while we were riding. At first I assumed it was wheel chair riders but I never saw anyone get on from a wheel chair or any wheel chairs waiting when we exited.

Interesting, but, strange. I wonder if because there are bigger crowds this time of year that the riders are doing stupid things that get the ride to shut down. Who knows. I guess we will find out eventually. The last time I was there it worked fine, it was the UP ramp that wasn't working. That is a bit of a climb.

We've been here a week. Been to MK 4 times and haven't been able to ride it yet. The line is always way backed up at the bottom as others have observed.

Did you actually wait in the line?

I understand not letting the escalator keep sending people to the top of the ride if they were not loading people onto the ride, therefore holding people at the bottom. However, this was more than that. They actually held us at the bottom for over 5-10 minutes while no one was even at the top. They were sending the ride around empty and were just letting people get off the ride.

We were at MK three days this week and all three days when we tried to go on People Mover, they had everyone stopped at the bottom and they get everyone off that is currently on the ride and then they start letting people onto the ride. This ride used to be a walk-on but now you have to wait for them to get everyone off the ride before they allow you on. It's really annoying and strange at the same time. Happened all three times we were at MK.
We had the same experience. The CM told us it was having issues working this past week.

FWIW No problems when we rode any of the approx. 6 times between 8/15 and 9/2. (They did stop the up escalator once, when it was so crowded at top people couldn't move out of the way for people getting off the escalator.)

Sorry, but that is not the reason there is no longer a PeopleMover in Disneyland.
The real reason is much more sad and depressing.
