What's 'wrong' with Catholicism (dare we try to discuss without debate?)

Of course, the decision has to be in the bounds of reason. I.E. you can't expect to run a brothel full of 11-year-olds and be okay under Moral Conscience

oh that'll bring out the 'how do you know where to draw the line' crowd for sure :rotfl2:

And, of course, the answer of , "Well, You have to trust your Confessor (Priest), and your own communion with the Spirit", will fail to convince anyone who is dead set against the Catholic faith to begin with. :-)

Someone said they are not misinformed, ignorant or generally a bad person because they don't practice the same faith as Catholics do. We Catholics are also not misinformed, ignorant or generally bad people either. We just believe something different than you do.

That was me.

And, hey, it is obvious that catholics believe differently than I do.

The reason that I posted that comment was that I have noticed the constant barrage of catholics calling me, and other non-catholics, misinformed, ignorant, or catholic-bashers (hateful). It is always, how can a non catholic disagree when they do not know catholicism.

While I disagree with the roman catholic faith on many many issues, I have never, NEVER, called any catholic, ignorant, misinformed, or hateful.

Sorry, but I do not have to be a practicing catholic to know that catholics say their Hail Marys, that they believe that the bread and wine is actually Jesus Christ (which is only to be administered, by a catholic priest, to catholics in good standing), that they believe in sacraments, that they believe in the celibacy of the preisthhood, that they believe that the church has a right to forbid birth control, etc.. etc... etc... etc... etc.. ( think that is enough etc.s!! LOL!!!)

To be honest, I do believe that many catholics could indeed be 'uninformed' by their church on many of these issues. They are overwhelmed with the mountains of church doctrine and tradition, and fail to see where much of this is completely contrary to what is dictated in the Scriptures.

Now, that being said. let all the accusations of catholic bashing begin!!!

actually I was thinking of the non-Catholic crowd

Well, it was going well until the last few posts...it has certainly taken a turn. Carry on. Have fun at the expense of your fellow Catholic DISers with all your ROTFL smilies and jokes etc....

just to clarify, most Catholics do not believe that the host and wine is actually "the body" of Jesus Christ. Not the physical body. :)

(thanks for new tag, made me smile :) )

I find that most people of all religions are uninformed on the Bible and their churches' beliefs and stances on many subjects. I also find that those Catholics that have attended Catholic schools are more informed than most Christians about the Bible and the Catholic faith.

On another note, reminding all Catholics, today is a holy day of obligation. See you at Church!

Hey! I wasn't making fun of it--I AM Catholic...

I was laughing at the fact that, in the past, my explanations of Catholocism have refused to garner any respect from certain people who've attacked the religion...

Did you attend Catholic schools? This may make my point or break my point.

Many people are misinformed about Catholicism. We've seen evidence on this thread and many others. Just like I'm sure Catholics are misinformed about other religions. It's not an insult- it's a fact.
And Catholics do not take the Bible literally. Catholics are taught that the Bible is to be used as a guide to living a grace filled life. So why would it matter if doctrine is contrary to Scripture ?

Actually, I believe birth control is not seen as a sin. It's just that they want Catholics to use a certain type of birth control that does not include the bc pill. Natural Family Planning works for several couples I know, however I went the "to be sure" route. :)

Well, you many not believe that birth control is seen as a sin, but the only thing that matters is that the roman catholic church does see it as a sin. Even methods that prohibit conception.

How can NFP be any different than a condom? Both prohibit conception. Neither would allow for a life to be created and then aborted. The only difference, it involves the church in the intimate physical relationship between a married man and woman. Ummmm.. Okay!!!

I thought the marriage bed was undefiled?

It is really funny when you think about it! I can see it now... God giving explicit knowledge and instruction on the 'days of the month'. LOL! Not in any Scriptures that I have read?

But, if that is what the catholic church wants to promote....

I don't understand the part where Catholics feel bashed.

Can you understand that I think it's every Catholic's right to practice their religion as he or she sees fit? That's guaranteed to every American.

But my problem is when Catholic policy starts bleeding over into public policy. I am not Catholic, so I don't want Catholic policies imposed on me.

Ok but is this a bad thing? Perhaps if people tried to live more by the teachings of the church/Bible and less like they want to and try to fit Church into their life instead of fitting their life into Church wouldn't the world be a heck of a better place because basically all religions teach the same thing, love one an other and be good people.

QUOTE]

More disagreements and wars have been started in the name of religion than any other factor in history. All religions may teach the same basic premise but many of them believe that their way is the only way. So I don't believe that this alone would make the world a better place.

Can we really get away with having a thread that picks apart, mocks and laughs at other religions in this same way? I really don't think so. I know the OP wasn't intending on this being a Catholic-bashing thread but it's been quite insulting at times. The laughing at our beliefs, for one. I would never ever insult, laugh at or pick apart another's religion. This thread is sad.

Or commit and confess multiple crimes and still be welcome in the church.

Oh wait...

I would agree with you on the Catholic faith part, but disagree with you on the Bible part. I was Catholic school educated for 12 years and Bible studies were never a big part of my education (not that there was anything wrong with that, IMO). :)

Good point. But it seems to me evangelical Christians get their own fair amount of criticism on these boards.
