So that whole "reborn" thing really chaps my hide. People treat is like a one time event that gives you a life time free pass. that bugs.
"Born again" is a Biblical term.
John 3
Jesus Teaches Nicodemus
1Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2He came to Jesus at night and said, "Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him."
3In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is
born again."
4"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"
5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the
Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying,
'You must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
ETA: Isn't it funny that we spend so much time debating what a Christian is? When the fact is that Jesus never intended to start the whole new religion of Christianity. He intended to simply teach us to be better people.
I disagree, especially with your last sentence. Jesus came as a blood sacrifice to reunite mankind with God. Why do you think He was willing to die on the cross?
Luke 22
19And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."
20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the
new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.
Mark 2:16-18
16And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
17When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous,
but sinners to repentance.
Mark 8:34-36
34Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?
Why did Jesus tell his disciples to spread the gospel (good news)? Why did He reject the religion of the religious leaders?
