IMHO they should have gone the way of the pink frosting that turned the castle into an ugly mess. We actually put off our trip for a year because of that cake.
I actually scheduled a trip to coincide with the repainting of the cake into the castle!
Just kidding, but I was there at the time, and I do have a picture of myself standing in front of the castle, looking ecstatic, painters rolling on the gray in the background. It was a mess, half cake and half castle (which really emphasized the hideousness of that pink!), but it was a very hopeful time.
I can't stand the legacy monuments in front of Epcot. They look so morbid, and it was such a beautiful, open area before. The hand over Spaceship Earth is not my favorite, but I can live with it. The hat I didn't know was permanent until reading this thread! But even though it looks sort of temporary, I wasn't in love with the theater, so I doubt I'd have thought much about it on my next trip.
At least you knew with the hideous pink castle cake that it was coming down. The hat is nice and it does look good at night, but it needs to go elsewhere in the park IMHO. Oh well, there are more important things to be concerned about.
and I should tell it like it is but that is my opinion!
