What's up with the Socerer's hat at MGM?

IMHO they should have gone the way of the pink frosting that turned the castle into an ugly mess. We actually put off our trip for a year because of that cake.

I actually scheduled a trip to coincide with the repainting of the cake into the castle! Just kidding, but I was there at the time, and I do have a picture of myself standing in front of the castle, looking ecstatic, painters rolling on the gray in the background. It was a mess, half cake and half castle (which really emphasized the hideousness of that pink!), but it was a very hopeful time.

I can't stand the legacy monuments in front of Epcot. They look so morbid, and it was such a beautiful, open area before. The hand over Spaceship Earth is not my favorite, but I can live with it. The hat I didn't know was permanent until reading this thread! But even though it looks sort of temporary, I wasn't in love with the theater, so I doubt I'd have thought much about it on my next trip.

Oops! My mistake, but I guess I was confused about the difference between an icon and what Disney uses as their focal point or Centerpiece of the park. You know, like when you're walking around MK and you know that the castle means the center of the park.

As for this thing being permanent, UGH! At least you knew with the hideous pink castle cake that it was coming down. The hat is nice and it does look good at night, but it needs to go elsewhere in the park IMHO. Oh well, there are more important things to be concerned about.

Yup! The icon is what they used to market the park. The Earful Tower was always on ads and promotional items from Disney.

I do agree the hat is pretty at night - but move it already!!!!!

I thought the pink castle was hideous, but I've only seen it in pictures (thank goodness, lol). I do like the Mickey hand at Epcot, but think the Legacy walls are awful.

As far as the Hat...well, I like it, I'm a fan of Sorcerer Mickey, BUT, I think it would be better if it were somewhere else...I don't know exactly WHERE it should be, but not where it is!

Okay, I am a hat lover, I must admit. I read somewhere that the reasoning for the hat placement was due to the plans to overhaul the Great Movie Ride. There was some talk of demolishing the theater due to the construction of the new attraction; Imagineers placed the hat in front of it in case the theater was to be raized. The park would have a new "weenie" and the construction wouldn't be as disruptive. Has anyone else heard anything about re-doing the Great Movie Ride?

I hate the hat! The Tree of Life fits with the animal/conservation theme, Cinderella's Castle fits with the fairy tale theme and the Ecosphere fits with the technology theme. What does a big blue hat have to with 1940's Hollywod? I don't understand? And it definately doesn't belong in front of the theatre.
As for the Leave a Legacy....I didn't. I could not put my image on that eye sore.

Now I know I shouldn't mince words and I should tell it like it is but that is my opinion!

The Sorceror's Hat is a Disney symbol for magic (in movies and everywhere else) and Fantasia came out in November of 1940.

I heard that the hat was put where because Esiner doesn't like the movie ride but can't get rid of it. So he put the hat between the main entrance and the ride so that it is hidden by the hat.

I hate the theater. I think it's ugly, and the ride is my least favorite in the park.
I also like the Mickey hand at Spaceship Earth. I thought I would hate it, but now when I see photos without it, it looks naked!

Unfortunately, just because the movie is from 1940 doesn't mean the giant hat with fiberoptic lighting fits the theme of the park. It clearly doesn't. It is an ultramodern structure that just happens to be based on something from a 1940 movie. I love the hat. I think its wonderfully whimsical in the same way as the icons at All Stars. It just doesn't belong where it is.

Have to agree with most of the other posters. I firts thought Mikey's arm rising along side the Sphere at Epcot was just plain wrong but have learned to love it. The hat is great but it is in the wrong location.

By the way the Earful Tower was meant to be more than just an icon. One of the ears is a supersized lighting rod to help protect the park and the guests.

This is also true of the Mickey statue on top of the spinning globe above Crossroads of the World just inside the park entrance.
