What's the going rate for a certified summer tutor?

I'm a teacher, certified in elementary and special education with my masters in reading. I took a summer position tutoring the two girls across the stree 4 hours per week. I'm working with both of them at the same time for one hour a day, Mon. to Thurs. I'm charging the parents $25 per hour. The mother seemed to think that this was too much, but I won't do it for less as I have my own family to spend time with and this is just some extra cash. What's the hourly rate for tutors in your area? Am I being unreasonable asking this price?

I charge $12.00 an hour for one child. I really don't think you are charging too much for two children. Maybe the mother just can't afford it, but I doubt she will find tutoring much cheaper.

I think that's about right. I'm a certified English teacher, and have also considered tutoring for extra cash. Around here, $20-25 is generally what is charged. I'm in a pretty low-income area, so sometimes people charge $15 if they know the family can't swing more. Are you charging $25 an hour to work with both girls? That seems like a bargain to me!

Yes. It's $25 per hour to work with both girls. I forgot to add that their father is a Doctor and they looked into sending the older daughter to a summer tutoring program that would have cost $7,000,.

We are paying DS's teacher $15 an hour for summer tutoring. So $25 for 2 sounds about right.

I pay $45 per hour for one child.....$25 for two is a bargain in my area! Sylvan, etc. are much more than what I pay and my son gets individual attention from someone very familiar with our school curriculum so it's worth it for us. I think your rate is very reasonable.

I am doing two hours a week for one of my sons and paying $25 an hour. I felt this was a fair amount because if I went with a learning center for one on one I would have paid $37.50 an hour. My thinking is, the teacher at the learning center will not get the full $37.50 since some of that will be going for overhead costs at the school. Plus, the money I pay will be tax free since it will be paid in cash.

Although it is going to add up fast, I think it is a great investment in my childs educational future.

I'm a certified teacher with a Masters and Rank I and I would charge $25 a child(I'm not tutoring right now, but I did a little before I had kids and have thought of doing it as some extra money, like you). This is in a rural area, too(I would think in a more suburban/urban area it would be more). That is the going rate. I think you are giving them a bargain, IMHO.

Since the district pays me $25.00 per hour per child when I home school I also charge $25.00 per hour when I tutor. Many of my colleagues argue that the $25 .00 is too low and charge upwards of $40.00. I'm not trying to get rich, but with a Masters degree your not exactly over charging at $25.00 per hour. I would think that the $12.00 would be for a student tutoring another student.

I guess it all depends on what part of the country you are in. My DD is a teacher and she charges $50 MINIMUM per hour, which is the going rate here in north Jersey! A friend of hers who teach HS math gets $62!

I'm paying $35 an hour for my DD's dyslexia teacher. I think that is a bargain, and it hopefully will pay off in the fall.

I have been tutoring for about 5 years now (staying home with kids) and I charge $25 - $35 an hour. It really depends on the age of the child, subject area, etc.. .

For example: one family with 3 kids (3rd, 5th, 7th graders) I charge $70 for
2 hours -- we go over summer packet sent home from school an
work on summer reading. (they come to my home)

same 7th grader during school year I charge $30 an hour for
math tutoring (I go to her school)

Yet another student I charge $25 an hour for math only (his
mom is a childhood friend of mine) (come to my home)

Also I tutor for another family 3. I charge $100 for 3 hours. I
do go to their house, but tutor back to back.


I think what you are charging is very fair!!! I am considered 'low' for my area (just outside of Boston), but I not doing it to 'get rich'. My families stay with me for years, so it is a consistent income -- which helps fund the family trips to Disney and summer 2007 Europe for 3 weeks!!

HI .. I have been a tutor for just over five years now. I am in Ontario, Canada and I charge $25 an hour for elementary aged children. I also teach high school math and english and charge $30 an hour. All my studedts have one on one lessons. When I first started, I charged $15 - 20 and parents told me that for the work I do, I should charge more - I was pleased. Again, I think its according to area one lives in.

When I tutored a second grader, I charged 35 an hour, and her employer paid me. When I tutored a friend's child, I charged 18 an hour, since she was paying me directly. I wouldn't do it for less than 18 an hour, as I also spent time preparing lessons and making things (manipulatives, quizzes, magnetic sentence puzzles, etc.) in addition to the lessons.

There are many people who tutor who ask 40-50 dollars an hour.

I often home tutor kids that have been kincked out of school. The school pays me 25/hour. During the summer I would not charge anything less then 25/hour because of the time involved with lessons.

I home teach Alg I and II, Geo. I, Social 7-12, Eng 7-12, Science 7-8, Earth Science, Bio, Chem, Phys Ed, Home and careers. I tend to keep really busy during the school year after school that I do not really want to do it during the summer unless I know the student well.
