What's the going rate for a certified summer tutor?

Ok. Glad to see that I must be charging a reasonable rate for almost anywhere in the US. We just had $4,000 worth of work done on our car and van... Raally bad luck I guess. We leave next week for Disney, so the money that I make this summer just goes back into savings to help pay for the car bills. ( Disney is paid for including dining.) Another parent is interested in her child being tutored as well, but I'm not sure if I will do it. After all, I have 2 DDs that need me for the summer as well. My husband and I are both teachers in the same district, so we enjoy our summers with our girls. I'm just hoping for about $700 this summer to help with the extra expenses from the car bills. Wish me luck.

I haven't read all the replies but...

I, too, am an elementary teacher with my Master's in Reading.
20 years ago when I was in college, I tutored for $20.00/hour.
If I were to do it now, my rate would be $35.00/hour.
There are many tutors around here that get $40.00/hour but they teach middle school math.

That lady is getting a bargain at $25.00/hour for 2 kids.

My wife and I charge $75-100 per hour for one-to-one tutoring. We travel to each student's home and prepare needed materials for the tutoring session. That's the going rate in the suburbs of NYC.

I forgot to add that I have already spent over 4 hours just gathering materials and planning activities. The mother expects them to have at least 1 hour of homework from me per day. I will buy some work books etc. when I go home to Pittsburgh to visit. ( There's no good teacher stores near me.) I will give her the receipts so that she can reimburse me, but I am not charging for my planning time. ( Although maybe I should take about 10 minutes of time each day just to plan at their house as I have to check finished work and assign activities for homework.

I don't think I am charging enough! ($12 an hour) Oh well, I can't go back to change it now, but I will definately up it for next summer!

I am paying $25.00 an hour for twice a week...It's what I pay during the year too. I wish she was only $15.00 an hour I would send her everyday..

If I were looking for a math tutor, I'd contact a highschool math teacher and ask them for help with getting a junior or senior student. I did this for dd while she was in the 7th grade and the math teacher had 3 different students call me. I chose a senior and paid her $20/hr. It worked out great! She was young enough that my daughter felt comfortable with her. She would go to my daughter's school on test days and wait on her to get out of math class to find out how well she did on the test. She also kept in touch with dd's teacher to find out for herself how she was doing with her homework. This girl was a GEM!!

Highschool teachers are a great resource for locating student tutors. They know which of their students will be good at teaching. Unless there is a specific need (dyslexia, etc) to have a degreed professional, I personally would prefer a kid because my dd would be more relaxed with a 17-18yr than an adult.

I do think it is great that teachers can make good money tutoring - since we all know they aren't paid their full worth at a school. :thumbsup2
