Whats the big deal with Park openings??

We try to relax and not go commando. And that's why getting to the parks before opening works so well for us. We can hit the big rides in the first hour or two without long waits, then we can relax and take our time for the rest of the day.

This says it all! It is such a terrific feeling when it seems like you have a section of the park all to yourself, isn't it? We had the same thing in Adventureland the Saturday they were filming the Christmas Parade (Sunday, not Saturday). Once we cleared Main Street it was like no one was there!

That IS commando, LOL. I do exactly the same thing, FWIW.

By far the best opening is at MK. ... at which time the train comes in. Mickey and Minnie, a few other characters, and a family of the day are all riding it. The family gets to officially open the park by throwing pixie dust. The whole thing is a really magical way to start the day.

Has anyone ever been the Family of The Day at the MK opening ceremonies? How do they choose a family? What a feeling that must be for a lucky family

A friend of mine said they were. They were picked partially because it was their son's birthday...

I always thought of Commando as criss crossing the parks with touring plans... Not necessarily just getting there early.

I've learned at the MK getting there early saves hours. Our key area is fantasy land plus the indy cars around the corner in Tomorrow land. The rest of the lands are all doable by using fastpass. Fantasy land isn't. Too many rides with long lines that do not use fastpass. And when it loads up with strollers, it's very hard to get around in it.

We head to the parks early (thanks to the DIs) is because we go in the value season and the hours for the parks are shorter, so we try to get every minute in the park. Usually about 5pm it is dark and then we slow down and try not to lose anyone. We also stay in the park from opening to closing.

I always thought of commando as having an exact schedule for the whole day and rushing from each ride to the next trying to keep on a strict timeline.

I guess we like to go commando for the first couple hours, then relax.
