It's possible that it's the twelve day rental that's causing what I assume is crazy pricing.
Try splitting into two bookings of six days each, or seven and five days. The standard car rental 'week' is five to seven 24-hour periods.
We have two major tradeshows in Orlando in mid and late October. Being in O-Town, everyone wants to go. I usually check the Orange Co. Convention Center website for tradeshow dates before I book a trip to WDW. NACS, Globalshop, and a couple of other shows send room and car rates through the roof!
This may not have anything to do with it, just MHO.
I don't know what's going on with Alamo lately. We're going Sept.29-Oct.4 and we keep getting outrageous prices too. DH likes a convertible but the rates we're getting are like $300-400! And it bills us the daily rate x 5 rather then the weekly rate. We just used them for 7 nts. in May and it was only $142 incl. taxes/fees. I'm hoping they'll drop as it gets closer.

Try Dollar.com they seem to be the cheapest so far. They are located in the airport. I booked an intermediate sized car for $235.00 with taxes included from 10/13 - 10/22.
