Hi,

I've looked through the past threads on the subject but wanted to get the latest information.

We're going for 15 days at the end of August next year and I'm looking to hire an intermediate SUV. The best price I have is £326 with the alamo brits link but I wanted to know what the best price I can hope to get with all insurance and an additional driver. I'm hoping to get under £300, is that reasonable ? What has anyone else managed ?

Past performance being no guide of course.

Thanks for your help.

Liam

BTW What's with the direct prices for flights next summer. Still well over £1000 pp for our dates.

We are flying out today, I waited for a recent hertz sale, 9 days int suv cost 136 after 10% quidco. So for 15nights that would equate to 226 but as you say past prices may not be available again. O rarely book til 1-2 months out unless I see a deal.

Thanks for your quick response, Wayneg.

Where do you normally look for your deals ? I obsessively check Kayak, Carrentals.co.uk, TravelSupermarket.com and are signed up for every car hire loyalty card going.

In your experience, when and where are the best deals to be found ?

Thanks,

Liam

The good thing about car hire is that most bookings can be cancelled up to 7 days before you pick up for no fee. So you can book something that you'd be prepared to pay, and then keep an eye on the prices. I booked through the Brits link, then it did drop later on by about £30 and I simply modified my booking and got the lower rate. The /brits link didn't track with cashback for me though, so beware of that when doing cost comparisons - it may or may not. The advantage of booking something, is that just occasionally a specific car type will sell out. E.g. I have also now booked through Hertz for a period overlapping with Wayne, but I was not offered an intermediate SUV, only a standard. This suited me, but it was more expensive. The disavantage is obviously that the charge goes through immediately on your credit card, so you are paying out the money earlier than if you wait.

Welcome to the world of obsessive internetting!
