What Would you like to see be done for Pool Security?

What should be done to Secure the Pools?

  • Forget security - let people use whichever pool they want. It's not that big of a problem anyway.

  • Have different color plastic wrist bands for each pool, and check ID's

  • Hand out special "pool bracelets" at hotel check-in

  • Add gates and card readers at each pool area

  • Have random spot checks of room keys, as is done now.

  • Charge a pool fee to people who want to use a different resort's pool

Here's a poll about pool security. There have been some really good ideas out there, but which one do you like the most, or think will work the best?

None of them will ever work because none of them will ever be implemented. Increased pool security means increased DVC annual dues. DVC members would never go for an increase in dues to pay for added security.

I think by adding gates and card readers it would take away from the beauty of all these pools. The wristband sounds like an inexpensive way to control pool crashers!

Actually, most of the problem seems to be at the Feature Pools. Since these are not the sole responsibility of DVD, the cost to DVC members probably wouldn't be enormous.

The gate idea was tried and didn't work at Vero ON IT'S OWN, because people just lurked about the gate, waiting for someone to exit/enter in front of them, you need something that helps the CMs to identify the cheats ONCE THEY ARE IN THE POOL AREA. . If you use the gate idea ( which is costly to implement and potentially unsightly) you need to work it with a wristband/handstamp idea anyway for the reasons I've mentioned above. I'd rather start with a wristband/handstamp and see if that has a satisfactory result, if not then you can bring in the more structural measures of fence and gates. .

The other problem with the gate card readers at Vero was that they were often malfunctioning..resulting in the gates being propped open by a trash can, etc.. between maintenance visits. I agree with the wrist bands, but if you're going to use them, then "enforce" them...don't just make them a fascade.

I was not aware that the pools were such a large issue. Maybe pool hopping but I think having randome key checks(as is done now) might be the only way to go. Maybe they should enforce this more during peak times, but we dont need card readers, gates etc. I dont want to be imprisoned, maybe the wrist band idea but while on vacation I just dont want to be bothered

Wristbands worked well while we were in Maui.... You just showed your room ID at the towel shack and they gave you one. Different colors for different days.

It only took 2 minutes and made it easy for all to spot the NONguests. We loved collecting the different bands.... and added them into our scrapbook.

Do I think the pool at OKW needs to use them..... no..... but from what I hear SOB does.

Just my thoughts...........

I didn't vote. We only use the quiet pools at OKW, and see no need to go elsewhere. I understand why some of you do, but it is not important to me. I certainly would NOT want to go through any of the "rigamorole" talked about in the poll just to go down to visit my nearest quiet pool. I probably wouldn't go at all!

While we're members at OKW, and don't pool hop, I think that gates would solve two possible problems. 1) It would stop the "trespassers" from using resort pools and 2) It could possibly prevent a tragedy when a young child may wander away from a parent that isn't being watchful. Gates may also be a little cheaper than other alternatives, and with thought, could probably be blended well into the theme of the resort.

I didn't see snipers listed, so I voted gates. We did the wrist bands at a hotel in Ohio last year, and they kept getting lost or wet. and we had to keep going back to the front desk to get more.
Don't they still check your key when you ask for towels? I know they used to. They also would stamp your child's hand so they could go down the slide at the BW. They would let you go down once without the stamp, then they made sure you had it afterwards.

People will find away around gates, they always have and I just don't believe there is an attractive way to retrofit the popular pool areas with one.

I'm not crazy about wrist bands either, especially if you want to take two or three quick dips in the pool each day. Do you spend the whole day with the wrist band on,do you cut it off and keep going back to whoever & where ever you got it from. Water parks at the Jersey shore use wrist bands with a time limit on them. Kids with expired bands know to keep their hands in the water when employees are watching. Also,if your going to pay a CM to look at wrist bands, why not pay him/her to ask for ID's. You'd also need tons of different styles & colors so people with an ALL STARS wrist band is easily identifyable from a BC guest.

Personnally I think when Disney decides this is a problem that is causing them to loose guests and money, then they'll do something about it. I think the best way is with a CM inspecting ID's. For the money it would cost to install and maintain a fence & gate system I think they would get better results from paying a CM. One, it puts money into another employees pocket. Second, once word gets out to all the freeloading parasites the Disney is onto them, then I think the abuse will go away.

I am all for getting rid of the pool free-loaders! However, I'm not particularly thrilled with any of the options suggested. I've been to Vero and the automatic gate was a pain. I forgot my room key more than once at my pool chair and had to "piggy-back" on someone to get back to my family. I don't like the idea of having a CM randomly checking room keys because I really don't want to be bothered once I've settled in. Also, random key checks has more of a "guilty until proven innocent" feel to it for me.

Of all the options, I like the wristband one the best. I don't think that every pool needs a wristband, just the premier pools where a lot of the abuse is like at SAB, BW, Poly, AKL & WL. And then, maybe only at the busy times ... you really don't need someone handing out wristbands at 8:00 pm. The color could change daily (or weekly) and the design would be different for each hotel. You can either get your wristband when you get your towel, or a CM could check everyone's room key and give you a wristband when you're OK'd. I'm still not particularly happy with wearing a wristband, but I think it would free up more space at the pools with fewer freeloaders and I wouldn't be looking over my shoulder when I pool hop.

I think that some people will be able to get around any kind of "security" method. However, the majority of the freeloaders will be deterred and more room will open up for the rest of us.

Prosecute Trespassers for tresspassing! What a novel idea. The word would get around.
