We have an upcoming reservation ** 5/23-** and ****5/26 I got some news at the doctor's office yesterday that might keep us from going; I'll know more today after another dr. visit. But right now there is a 90% chance we'll have to cancel. This is the first time I have had to cancel a reservation; What happens to those points? Would I be able to rent the reservation this late or rent the points if I cancel?

Thanks

you should be able to rent the points.

guess it is too late to bank them.

might ask about your once in a lifetime banking - just because that is a bunch of points.

I'm thinking at this point they will go into holding and you don't want that... definitely post the ressies on the Rent/Trade board and see what happens. I hope and pray you do not have to cancel!!! :wizard:

If you cancel today or tomorrow LATEST points will not go into Holding Status ( which would mean that they then carry additional restrictions on re-using them ). If you cancel with less then 31 days to check-in date they will go into Holding.

I agree with spiceycat - call MS so you can be clear on options, especiallay if you are beyond your banking deadline explain your situation to MS. Only current Use Year points used in your reservation would be bankable, any banked &/or borrowed points that may have been used in the ressie would have to be used for another reservation by the end of use year ( but who knows, MS may make further exception so it doesn't hurt to ask ). Also, current Use Year points could be transferred to another DVC member.

Wishing you the best & hope that all will be well for you :flower3:

First of all, I'm sorry to hear you are facing some medical issues and that you may have to cancel your trip.

As others have stated, you must cancel 31 days or more prior to check in to avoid having your points go into holding. Your deadline for your first reservation is 4/22 (tomorrow!) and your deadline for your second reservation is 4/25. If you are within the first 8 months of your UY, you could bank any current-UY points provided you cancel by 4/22 and 4/25 respectively. If you cancel after those dates, the points go into holding and cannot be banked. Any banked or borrowed points used for these reservations will remain in the current UY and cannot be banked or "unborrowed".

You can try renting the reservation. The Rent/Trade board here on the DIS allows you to rent a reservation once you are within 30 days of check-in. It's intended to allow people with a hardship (having to cancel a trip in the holding period) to try to rent their reservation. Personally I think it's easier to rent points than a reservation especially if you are early in your UY or can bank the points and make a reservation for dates within your next UY. You would have a longer time period to find a renter, though availability could be a problem unless you are able to use those points to book something a few months out. When you rent an existing reservation, you have to find someone who wants those exact dates, room type and is happy with the resort you have booked and can travel on short notice.

All the details may be posted if renting over on the DVC Rent/Trade board (subject to the posting guidelines there of course).

thank you and best wishes....
