We were put with a couple yestaerday & the husband told us about his dilemma at work that has been bugging him a while now.

He works for a retail store, he is a manager & has 2 bossees directly over him & then the big boss.

A couple weeks ago he & his staff were having to input #'s for their inventory into the computer system for the end of the year counts. To do this they use formulas. From what I understand someone put in a wrong count last time they did inventory which screwed it up this time. By the #s being screwed up it means a major negative inventory & then no bonus.

Her dh turned the #s into his bosses who then turned around & "fudged" the #'s so that the #'s would be correct. He & another staffer knew for a fact that's what they did. (because he saw the before & after #'s)

Now what? He's afraid that all the bosses were in on the decision that if the #'s didn't add up then they understood to make them add up....even if that meant lying....

He's decided to keep his mouth shut at work & has only told us...though it's driving him crazy...


I dont' have any idea if this was understandable - its quite hard to explain & in fact I'm not postive I've got it all myself - but I got the jest of it - someone lied to get their bonus & he saw it happen & doesn't agree with it & fears if he went to anyone he'd be terminated but feels he shouldn't let it be swept under the rug...

That's what I got out of it too.

Can your friend do a re-inventory of the item in question. If the numbers are close to what the upper managers corrected it to that should put his mind at ease.
 
Fudged is never legal.


I read it as:
they were supposed to sell a certain amount based on the beginning numbers. But due to the discrepancy between the beginning numbers and the existing inventory, it was not possible to end the year with positive numbers. The decision was made to smear fudge all over the accounting sheets to hide the problem instead of fixing it.

YEs that's it exactly. They should have corrected the mistake & taken the loss & taken the consquence I think - instead they fixed the #'s to what they wanted them to be - everyone gets a bonus & then next month this problem will come up again....

I guess its just part of retail when you deal with greedy people who will do anyhting to get their bonuses if its right or not. Its just sad for him to be put in that kind of circumstance when he feels it wrong but cant afford to loose his job by speaking up.
 
Besides going to one of the other boses, can he go to HR and speak with someone about it? Or is there an anonymous tip line for this sort of thing?

We have a tip-line also at work, but in the OP's case, they WILL know who it is, so that makes it even tougher.
