What will happen with Hey Disney! now? (Everything you say to your Echo will be sent to Amazon)

The EU has far stricter controls on privacy, and Amazon disclosed that the device active records only when it’s been triggered. If you have an Amazon account, you can view and listen to your recordings.

Amazon isn’t spending billions of dollars storing recordings of your conversations. It retains the recordings it does have on you to better the service - a very small fraction of a percent are listened to by humans to ensure the device provided the service you requested. Standard quality control.

There’s way too much hysteria, and less facts, about the device on this fourm. If you believe the Deep State is listening in on you… I can almost guarantee you they have far better methods than working with Amazon or hacking your device.

People tend to fear what they don’t understand. I was gifted an Echo Dot a decade ago and thought it was the most useless item ever - until I started using it.

It's not like you "understand" and don't "fear" because of some kind of superior knowledge. You just believe what they tell you and trust it.

I'm sure that never went sideways for anybody. :crazy2:

Yes. Nobody in here said it was their biggest OR their only concern, except the one person here using ad hominem fallacies against who disagrees with them.

We get it. You like Amazon. That doesn’t make others who disagree dumb or uneducated.

I agree. The "you are just afraid because you don't understand" line is tired. I've been in IT for 40 years. I think I understand. I've seen some crazy stuff since the early 80s. It's hard to get away from these types of devices as it is. I'm not adding another one to my life unless it adds substantial value. I can't eliminate these situations, but I can certainly minimize them.

This is literally the only privacy related topic that ever comes up on these forums. Gee, I wonder if it is anything to do with bloggers posting “Amazon is listening in to your kids private conversations” and people taking the bait?
I would have no idea about bloggers putting out posts about anything, or influencers. You are making vast assumptions about where others get their information that are not based in reality. The ad hominems are getting old and tired and I’m going to ignore you from here on out.

So you don’t use a cell phone of any kind?

Of course I do. Like I said, it's about minimizing risks. And nobody else has physical access to it.

If someone at Disney handed you a cell phone when you checked it, would leave it on and put personal information on it?

Why do you use a smartphone? Maybe the manufacture has a back door tool the deep state has access to, to access your phone, location, etc. - even when you believe you’ve turned this setting off.

That’s basically the same argument being made about the Echo device.

Nobody is going to go to the trouble, unless they have a reason to listen in on you. If you’re the leader of a drug cartel, sure. bit a typical Disney tourist?

It’s somewhat ironic to me that that agencies that won’t listen to me now (due to funding/ ataffing$, are choosing instead to involuntarily listen in on me.

No, it's not the same argument. I wouldn't use a shared cell phone that someone else had physical access to either. A lot of connected devices have risks. It's about risk vs reward. The more of these devices you have then greater your risk. Someone else having access to it also increases your risk. I research any device I connect to my home network. Many will give backdoor access to your network and expose your information.

If somebody left a cell phone or an echo device on your front porch, would you go plug it in and use it?

When I said ‘Hey Disney, put me in the Twilight Zone’ I meant I wanted to ride the Tower of Terror…

Good luck everyone.

I tried Hey Disneyba few years ago, it was new.
I asked what time is the fireworks in the magic kingdom. Didn't know. I would up using the app. After I asked again using the exact name, it gave me the time

Because of the purge in posts, I did want to reiterate this: Amazon has said the device works by listening for a trigger word (Hey Disney), then once it hears the trigger word, it begins recording and uploads the recording to Amazon servers to process the request. With your personal decide, you can review these recordings. Per Amazon, only a fraction of a percent of these recordings are listened to anonymously by Amazon employees for quality assurance (that is, the device provided the information requested). That is, after all, how the service is improved.

Despite the “what if” comments above, it’s fair to point out that this device has been around for over a decade and there are -0- reports of anyone’s devices being hacked into or used for any other purpose than Amazon had described. In a few cases involving a crime, law enforcement has gotten access to the recordings and they were simply “Alexa…” questions and not full audio.

That said, I’m not naive. I acknowledge it’s possible that the NSA could hack these devices. But they can also hack your phone, computer, even car… and people think the biggest threat is the NSA is coordinating with Disney to figure out which room you’re in and which device you’re using so they can spy on you? Me thinks some people have watched too many spy movies.

And if you’re fearful of the NSA spying on you… well, you have a lot bigger problems in life.

Take care.
